In short, No. The PS2 and PSX use different hardware modes, you have to hard reset to switch modes. uLaunchElf is a PS2 application, and can't run PSX code. That being said work has been done on a PSX emulator, and it is promising to start. It has no sound and can't be run directly from uLaunchElf at this time, but if you follow progress it might just be able to some day.

    Not true.
Well, it is true that the PS2 uses two different modes to execute the different kind of executables (software), but the disc-detection is an entirely different case.

uLaunchElf is a PS2 application, and can't run PSX code.
Even that is not 100% true.
Of course, it can't run PS1-Code out-of-the-box, but can invoke the PS1-Driver and atleast start PS1-Games from disc.

But the answer to his question is:

It depends (which modchip he uses).
If you can force your modchip's/PS2s disc-recognition (on MechanicsController/"MechaCon"-Side) to recognize the inserted disc as a PS1-Disc, while the PS2 itself stays in PS2-(Execution-)Mode it is possible that he can start a PS1-Backup from uLE.

For example: If I boot my DMS3-PS2 and hold the Circle-Button, it recognizes the inserted disc as PS1-Disc.
Now, if I start some kind of Homebrew e.g. "uLE", I use the function "PS2Disc" in it and uLE invokes the PS1-Driver (PS1-Executionmode) and since the disc-type is correctly detected, the PS2 correctly runs the game then.

That being said work has been done on a PSX emulator, and it is promising to start. It has no sound and can't be run directly from uLaunchElf at this time, but if you follow progress it might just be able to some day.

Hwooo,... Wow, that's an old one.

And my boot method for PSX backups is to hold the power button and for PS2 backups just press the power button.
    That's good to know, but...

    I ran launchelf
...exactly "How" did you started it?
Did you forced your Modchip into PSX-Detection-Mode and started uLE through FMCB?

    I used disc control,
That shouldn't matter, if you simply want to start your PS1-Disc (regardless if backup, import, or original from your game-region in your case) through uLE.

changed the disc then I go to PS2Disc in MISC dir and nothing happens...
What do you mean by "changed disc"?
You should be able to start uLE through FMCB, while the PS1-Disc is inserted and your Chip forces the disc-detection to PSX-CD.

I have ulE burnt onto a DVD - that's how I started it.That's why I used disc control and changed the disc.

Then THAT was your fault, since the disc-detection is then forced to PS2DVD by your Modchip.

Just try to start uLE through FMCB, when your Chip forces the disc-detection to PS1 and it should work.
It should even autoboot the PS1-Game after the FMCB-Logo, when you force your Discdetection to PS1 with your chip.

That's why I used disc control and changed the disc.
Why would you even need that option turned on?
What do you mean by changed disc?

I hop you didn't swapped it with a slide-tool or something, since you have a modchip.
...and if you simply changed the disc by using the EJECT-Button, that option doesn't matter anyway...

    I never used FMCB
Well, it would be a good extention for your modchip atleast, because you can boot Homebrew from MC&USB, without a working laser.
