Not starting from HDD

Ok I've learned alot today and been experiementing with various elfs through the mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF method. ulELF oads up just fine on my PS2V9 Matrix Infinity 1.82 (Shipped with this version and all the upgrades seem to be minor) in Auto or Dev1 mode by pressing R1 on the slash screen.

After putting boot.elf (just tried lower case but upper didn't work either) (with LAUNCHELF.CNF) on my __boot HDD partition with the "SITE MNT" FTP command (thanks LookAtTheMonkeys) I tried taking out my memory card (just to be sure) and changing it to Dev2 mode just got a black screen when I tried to launch my boot.elf through the splash screen + R1 method. I could hear the HDD activating when I hit R1 to launch the boot file...but it just goes to a black screen after hanging on the MI splash for longer than usual while it reads the HDD.


P.S. As a side question I would like to make it so the reset button ALWAYS works with one press. It seems like tapping it only works in certain situations. Most of the time I end up holding it for 3-4 seconds for shut down and then booting it back on just for resetting.

If this is the first time you use Dev2, then this is quite normal. A first-time Dev2 application for an HDD can't be installed just by copying the ELF into the proper folder. You must also activate the Dev2 feature for that HDD by running the Dev2 installation disc. That will probably install some stuff you dont want in the "__boot" partition, but that doesn't really matter. You can just erase that stuff and copy the ELF you wanted into that partition instead, just like you tried before, but now it should work.

We don't have 100% control of that, as the usage of that button also depends on loaded device drivers. I'd prefer it to be more consistent myself, but I'm not yet sure how to achieve that.

Thanks dlanor, I got the Dev2Installer from infinity's site and that got it going. Seems like the config / button assignments aren't saving on the hard drive though. I'll have to experiment with it some more.

The Dev2 launchers of all mod-chips I know of, use launch methods that differ from those homebrew softwares use for HDD launching. Some future uLE version may implement their method as well, but for the time being Dev2 booting will have to use the default location for "LAUNCHELF.CNF", which is "mc0:/SYS-CONF/".

That folder is one which all homebrew installations should have on the memory card anyway, as lots of programs expect to find settings there, like "IPCONFIG.DAT" as used by uLE, SMS, hdld_svr, and some others.

Once you have that folder on the MC, uLE will use it as the default location for CNF files, but only if it does not find the CNF by the standard method in the same folder as the uLE ELF. (It's that 'standard method' that won't work on HDD for Dev2 boots.)

apparantly reset doesnt work whenever the harddisk is involved...

or the network adapter. on loading my network setup disc, the reset button will power off after logging into central station.
