I decided to softmod ps2 today, mostly out of interest in the hobby of having a media server. From what i've read around between here and sksapps, I've found an abundance of material to learn from.
my understanding is that you dont need any other existing soft/hardware for the slim models except having the lid modded for the swap trick. again, if i missed a step anywhere lemme know!
So i setup the the boot disc first, using and original copy of Socom 2, that being my favorite game on the console, quite possibly of all-time! any rate, i made the swap disc using all the tools i believe are needed with is; an .iso of the game then replacing the .elf file with the ulaunch file(is that correct?) then, burned that .img back onto a disc(right?).
from there i proceeded to made "modded" my slim in order to be able to actually swap out the original for the backup. From that point, my understanding is to, use the network config menu to boot to the launch file. this is where i've found my roadblock.
Before i go any further i want to state that i'm using the freemcboot tut in order to do this.
So after i hard-modded the ps2 slim, yes it is a model that can be modded scph-70012, i attempted to use the original socom 2 disc to perform the swap. Upon my first attempt, I swapped the discs as quickly as i could and when i went from main menu>lan>edit network config. when i did that, the burned/backup is already spinning in the console as it should, i tried to execute the network config menu to launch the disc(I'm wondering if i burned the disc properly at this point honestly, it being my first crack at this) only to the "red" please insert playstation/playstation2 format disc menu. Wasn't sure what to think exactly so i've been at this point in the process, repeating the "swap" in order to get the backup disc to launch!
Not sure where to look at this point, seeing as it being my first actual attempt to mod a ps2(have experience in modding, as i've modded my ps3/psp and rooted a couple of different android phones, as well as some modding favors for some buddies of mine as well so i'm not completely noob to the mod/backup scene(been at this stuff since Sega was running servers for DC games! just to boast a bit.) i'm not certain what i'm seeing when that insert...format disc. the backup .img i've made is recognized as a cdfs in my laptop(guessing that's the correct format for this) and when i go to swap the disc out with the backup i've made the game seems to run properly, although i didn't try playing the backup i made (i mean play the actual game) seeing i can still navigate to lan setting/config menu i assume that i'm going about this the right way. apologize for the short story, yet after all, i know explaining as much as i can about my issue help those willing to help me!
so my question(s) is; am i going about this the right way?is there any way to confirm the disc was made correctly? and if so, will i get the "red insert" screen if i didn't swap discs in time or right?
Thank you for your time and input on this one everyone, would really appreciate having a couple of consoles around the house to stream media to, seeing as i'm too lazy to just unplug stuff and move it into another room!
Again thank you and i'll come to edit or reply to this post to confirm my progress.
Thank you and party on dudes!....and dudettes!
Think i used the wrong .elf file!
now i gotta go out and get another blank dvd so...i'll.....brb

    Wow, big wall'o'text

First of all, you PS2 is already 'hard-modded' ??

Ok so I guess you are trying to instal FMCB to your memory card through Socom 2 ?
Can you please provide more info on how you tried to make the exploit work... it's a bit hard to read

Did you remove SCUSNGUI.ELF from the iso, and replaced it with uLaunch.ELF ? (don't forget to rename uLE to SCUSNGUI.ELF !!!)
Rebuild / Burn iso onto a disc.

Start your PS2 with the Original Socom 2 disc and swapped the disc at the main menu with your just created exploit disc, select LAN and select EDIT NETWORK CONFIGURATIONS ?
    uLaunch.ELF should start by now.

Did you have your sensors blocked ?

For some reason I can't post a reply I keeps saying i can't post links
    IDK why it's doing that
    My ps2 is not hard-modded

Yes using socom 2 and FCMB to exploit
I used the ps2 softmod tutorial found on freemcboot

I double checked the that backup disc was done correctly, checked to make toc settings were correct size, renamed the file, patched the iso as well as checked the disc worked when swapping it out of the PS2

yes did the original to backup swap as instructed for socom 2

    yes sensors are blocked
