Hi. I've got a problem with uLaunchELF v3.83. Originally it started off when I upgraded to from 3.80 to 3.81, but thought it'd be fixed in a later update. What's happening is I'm getting a flickering on the screen. It's like the text is jumping vertically up and down a pixel or 2. Thinking it's just that interlace got turned on or something, I went to the Screen Seettings, and I come to find that the interlace setting says "ON (locked)"... I've included 2 screencaps I took with my digital camera to show what I'm talking about.

Back in the 3.80 days, I had the interlace setting set to off, and it didn't jump like it does with interlacing on. Any way to unlock the interlace setting, like thru a cnf setting or something?

Running on a v7 SCPH-39001/R NTSC-U PS2, softmodded, with a 40gb drive. It's connected to an NTSC-U tv thru Composite video/audio cables. I can post my CNF files (launchelf.cnf and launchelf.cnf) if requested.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Later,
    Model: NTSC SCPH-39001/R (think it's a v7)
    Mod: PS1 Exploit Softmod
    Harddrive: Internal 40GB Seagate ST340810A
External drive: Apple iPod (in Disk Mode)

There's no need for pictures. I'm well aware of the phenomenon.

Not at present. The gsKit-based routines that have replaced the old libito-based routines for the display of uLaunchELF do not yet contain any support for non-interlace. That's why it's displayed as 'locked' in the configuration menu.

Since you have NTSC console and TV, you're still better off than PAL users (60Hz flicker is far less irritating than 50Hz). But there are some things you can do to minimize the flicker visibility.

For one thing, you can use Colour settings and JPG skins to lower the contrast between the text and its background. And any skin content should have no 'sharp edges' of high contrast to surrounding content. Most people agree that a dark skin helps, but since the worst flicker comes from the text you can also choose to use black text on a light grey background (or similarly toned skin).

Btw: The flicker you see in uLaunchELF with NTSC interlace is identical to what you see when viewing regular NTSC television programs. But there the moving pictures help distract you from noticing the flicker.

In case you haven't noticed it I just want to tell you that a new version of uLaunchELF (v3.84) is now available, which does have non-interlace support.

    Best regards: dlanor

Thanks dlanor for notifying me of the new version. I just tried it and it works great. I will admit that with interlacing on, the jpegs and stuff look better than with it off (kinda like turning off 16x anti-aliasing on a PC game), but I can live with it. I prefer function over how pretty it looks, and uLaunchELF functions real well.
