DVD Video Discs –
10-09-2005,07:35 AM
It would be great if launchELF could support reading files from DVD Video discs. the people working on SMS have implemented this into the media player, and i like to transfer the avi's to my HDD using launchELF (at the moment i use the swap trick to do so.)
it would be a really handy feature, and it's far easier to make the discs than the audio CD based methods, just a few kilobytes of dummy video on the disc in Nero, and the rest is free to use.
at the moment, all a DVD Video disc (even a pressed one) will show in LaunchELF is one _/ folder with nothing in it.
LaunchELF has come a long way. I was using it back when all it did was launch ELF's...
Now it's pretty much taken the role of CogSwap, ExecFTPs, and file management on my PS2.

DVD Data discs, yes, but i haven't got it to read anything from a DVD-Video disc, even a proper pressed disc... all i get is the .. and an empty directory labeled _/
no VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, or any other folders i might put on the disc appear.
the disc reads fine in SMS media player for me though without needing to swap the disc.
are you saying a DVD Video disc is supposed to load in LaunchELF already? if so, there must be some diference in the way LaunchELF handles the format, as on my PS2, it doesn't work (swap or no swap). (SCPH 50002 PAL Silver)

I just spotted this from EEUG in the SMS forum, in the SMS changelog.
- fixed bug in cdvd.irx (incorrect reading of DVD video disks sometimes);
As uLE also uses libcdvd this could mean the same fix is required here too.

I don't know I added a fix that "Neme" pointed out to me in uLE. The changes to libcdvd were added in LaunchELF v3.41j. Prior to that launchELF couldn't even read a DVD's contents properly but it works fine now as far as I know. At the time, I had tested my Burnout 2 PS2 DISC as well as the DVD movie The Fast and the Furious.

I got the impression from the above reply that uLaunchELF would support copying files off DVD media. I have an unmodded PS2 running uLE v3.41m via the exploit, but I cannot browse the contents of any DVD movie, pressed or burned. I cannot even see the VIDEO_TS or AUDIO_TS directories. Am I doing something wrong?

You aren't doing anything wrong. It doesn't seem to read them on unmodded consoles.

Unfortunately my own PS2 is unable to read any DVD discs due to dying laser, so I can't participate actively in fixing this, but hopefully 'E P' can implement the same changes in uLaunchELF that EEUG developed for SMS recently.

Oh OK, you want what EEUG recently added to SMS the DVD movie disc support. Sure it would be nice but you have to keep in mind that launchELF is very picky about cdvd. I would like to eliminate that dependency with ps2lib and libcdvd. Last time I tried it though I had nothing but problems.
EEUG has made numerous changes to cdvd that I don't even know where to start let alone how to forcibly make LaunchELF use it.
You also have to keep in mind that I have an unmodified console.

I know this, but I had the impression that libcdvd as used by SMS is based on the same release used for LaunchELF, including even some of the changes we made. If this is correct, then the base version should not be an issue, but only how to merge in the changes made by EEUG.
But then again, I just checked out his latest sources, and his SMSCDVD folder doesn't seem very similar to the original libcdvd project at all. But I still think this is worth looking into. I will have a look at it in any case, though I can't promise any useful results... (I can't even test it on any hardware myself, but only play with the pure software end of it.)
Edit: Ok, having checked his source code in some detail I no longer believe it's based on the same version as our driver, but I still think it can be done. It's just going to be a lot harder to do it, so none should hold their breath waiting...

The latter might not be a problem, as long as the driver itself can identify the media type and modify its behaviour accordingly. I mean, from the viewpoint of the API there is no real need to differentiate between normal DVDROM access (like for a game disc), or DVD-Video folder access, is there ? After all, accessing it like normal DVDROM folders is exactly what we want.
You also have to keep in mind that I have an unmodified console.
That is in fact an asset here, since the modifications EEUG made were intended mainly for unmodified consoles. Testing them with a modchip would not be a valid method.
