I would like to know if I can format my 400GB hdd with it, instead of WinHipp. See my freezing issue at:

http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49455 (400GB Hdd stuck at HDLoader .8b screen)

    Many thanks in advance.

    Yup

It's part of the HDD manager. Listed under the MISC items in the file browser when setting up the buttons in the config menu.

remember format will erase the entire drive. While you can delete and create new partitions to fix individual partitions.

I have read some of those posts, and I'm not sure if you really need to reformat. If you do, then you should be able to do it with either uLaunchELF or a 48-bit version of the DMS HDD formatter.

I tried to read up on what that 'anti-freeze' HDL version really is, but I found it hard going to get definite info, so some of my conclusions may be wrong... Though the 'anti-freeze' release was accompanied by some very hard to read posts (babel-fish translated ?!?), I gather that it is rather a 'sure-freeze' for some console models, as it appears that the guy has specifically combined the two patches that make absolutely no sense to have together... "/N" and "/S".

"/N" means "No disc seek" and is needed for booting with empty tray
"/S" means "Stop disc" and is useful (saves laser) when booting from disc

As you can readily understand, "No disc" makes no sense when booting from a disc, while "Stop disc" makes no sense if there is no disc. But some people want this combination for their ELF, so they can use the same ELF both for CD booting and for Dev1/Dev2 booting. But that only works for old model PS2s, of model v8 or older.

For later PS2 models, starting with v9, attempting to use both those HDL options results in certain freezing when the disc tray is empty. For these models you must have differently patched ELFs for different boot methods.

"/N" should only be used with ELFs to be booted from Dev1/Dev2
"/S" should only be used with ELFs to be booted from CD/DVD

I'm not sure to what extent that may have affected your HDL boot attempts, as you mentioned also having problems on a v7 PS2. Perhaps you do need reformatting, in which case you should be able to do it in uLE. But that feature has not been much tested yet, so if you run into any problem, you may want to try the DMS HDD Format tool.

The uLE HddManager is one of the subprograms accessible in the pseudo device "MISC" in the uLE FileBrowser. So you reach it simply by browsing to "MISC/", selecting the "HddManager" entry, and launching it as if it were an ELF file in a real folder.

It will then load HDD Modules and start scanning existing partitions, displaying its progress in the top left part of the screen until all have been found, when it displays the main menu of the HddManager, consisting of a partition selector in the right half of the screen, and some graphs and info listings in the left half of the screen. That left half is also divided into two parts, the top left quarter shows info for the entire disk, while the bottom left quarter shows info for the currently selected partition. And when you select HDL partitions you will need to use an extra command to find detailed info about it (this is to keep partition scan fast). Just like in the FileBrowser, you can open a command menu with 'R1', where you can select such commands as 'Create', 'Remove', 'Format', etc. (Only 'Format' affects the entire disk. The other commands are for partitions.)

If there is some major problem with reading your disk, I suppose you might get stuck before even reaching the main menu, but hopefully that won't happen.

Please report your results with uLE HDD formatting (either way), as we have very little feedback on its use as yet.

    Best regards: dlanor

Thanks for your respose. Is there a link to a 'clean' HDLoader (do I need patched or unpached?), because I have feeling that my HDLoader (the one that I got from the links mentioned) is BAD. (not to mention I am unable to understand his English?)

    Here are the links:

(can't understand what he is saying, nor belive that this version is the best, at least for me)

When last I looked the HDL_patch thread still contained the clean unpatched version of HDL, to be used as basis for all HDL patching. That version is quite useless as-is, but it is the template needed for all the improvements to be added by any version of HDL_patch, including "v0.8b". So you should always patch a copy of this file, keeping an original untouched for future patch needs.

because I have feeling that my HDLoader (the one that I got from the links mentioned) is BAD. (not to mention I am unable to understand his English?)
I also found some of his posts extremely cryptic, and I really don't have time (or interest) in digging through his prepatched HDL variants trying to figure out exactly what he did to them. It's better to make your own patched version anyway, for many reasons, the most important being that you know for certain exactly what patch options you used.

the anti-freeze hdloader is for maxtor hd's since it froze in the hdl splash screen, if you have any other brand it's ok, since your hd is ibm i guess the hdl anti-freeze version or the maxtor freeze would run ok in your hd and i've applied all patches to my clean hdl and never got an error of /n or /s maybe because my hdl.elf is in my hd not in mc or cd/dvd
    PS2 v9 unModded
    uLaunchELF 4.12
    Maxtor 200GB HDD
