Make a folder named BOOT on mc0:, then in this folder put BOOT.ELF, where BOOT.ELF is the uLaunchELF. BOOT.ELF is case sensitive. After you made that just boot with DEV1.

No, that chip has no Dev1 suport, so forget about it.

With chips that do support it, you simply create a folder with a specific name on your memory card, and put an ELF file with another specificic name inside that folder. (Usually this means using it as "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF", but variations exist.) After that you can choose to have that ELF started at power-on, by holding down some gamepad button during the startup (usually 'Triangle').

However, since your chip doesn't have it, this isn't an option for you.
You always have to boot from some kind of CD or DVD.

Not as I see it. Of course, you can regard it as 'booting' whenever one program starts another, but that is not how the term originated. Traditionally it's only used for a piece of fixed code used to load more complex and varied programs. These may in turn start other programs too, but that is not then referred to as 'booting'.

Btw: The term is really an abbreviation for 'bootstrapping' and refers to the image of a man trying to lift himself by grabbing his own bootstraps.

Anyway, with exploit his console will attempt to boot the software on a PS1 CD, in the process of which a controlled program crash will occur (the exploit trigger), thus starting the main exploit code, which in turn launches the uLE ELF.

Technically speaking, you might argue that the exploit is what really got booted here, and to that I might agree, but to continue in that vein and call the startup of uLE a 'boot' as well is a bit much for me (3 'boots' in total for a single startup).

In any case, I think it's better not to use terms like "direct boot from MC" when talking about any method that requires a bootable disc, be it by exploit for PS2 or by Swap Magic (or similar) for PStwo. Newbs seeing such phrases will inevitably misunderstand them and get their hopes up too high.

    Best regards: dlanor
