Get the free mcboot noobie package from sksapps.com, set it all up on your USB, boot into uLE how you normally do, and run the installer from the USB drive. After maybe 5 mins, you're done, exit to browser, and voila, uLaunchELF will be on your MC and no cd needed. It will show up where you would normally see Browser, system settings, if you booted with nothing in your drive.
Edit, I just noticed you said FMCB freezes at the logo, how long are you letting it sit before you decided it froze? Doing a new install *may* fix it, as there is now a 1.8b. I use 1.8, uLE 4.40, no issues at all. Otherwise I think you need to use a cd/dvd no matter what other method you use. I also recall the newest version consoles wont work with FMCB, what console version do you have?
SCPH-39001 V7 GH-019, fliptop case, FMCB 1.8, 80GB HDD (SMS console) 16MB card running it all
SCPH-39001 V7 GH-022 FMCB 1.8, 120GB HDD (Game console) 64MB card running it all
