Works perfect now!! thanks everyone!!
The RW was only for testing, I'll burn it in +R.
-R's work better for some people (myself included), so you need to make some tests to see what works for you.
yeah filled it with avis too.Originally Posted by McBeth

Hi,
I'm completely new to this so please be kind.
I have used Exploit in the past on my mate's console by creating an image using the Independence Compiler.
I pretty much had a tutorial running me through step by step with that one, and so having to worry about all this .cnf and boot.elf is completely new to me.
I am looking to use a DVD to install uLaunchELF as my PS2 can't read CDs anymore.
When you talk about "your BOOT.ELF file" is this just the one taken straight out from the package? Or do I have to patch it/edit it first? Does this require a 'trigger' disc?
What I'm trying to do is use uLaunchELF to start SMS on my PS2 by putting it on my Memory Card, without any need for cds as my laser is stuffed.
If someone could provide a complete, step-by-step guide (or link to one) it would be much appreciated.
Thanks, and sorry for being a noob.
Then the Independence exploit is not an option for you, as it only works with CDs. The trigger disc must always be a PS1 disc, and the PS1 never had DVD capability. So you will need some other method to launch programs from memory card (or USB device).Originally Posted by BlackMamba
Possible methods include mod-chips with 'Dev1' capability, or 'soft-mod' DVD discs such as SwapMagic, able to boot ELFs from non-CDVD media.
With uLE you can always use the "BOOT.ELF" straight from the release ZIP just as it is.When you talk about "your BOOT.ELF file" is this just the one taken straight out from the package?
The 'trigger' disc is not used to patch anything, but is used to start each boot session, to trick the PS1 launcher into starting an ELF from memory card instead of starting a PS1 game. Since this exploits a weakness in the PS1 launcher it will not work with any non-PS1 disc, and therefore you are out of luck with this method.Or do I have to patch it/edit it first? Does this require a 'trigger' disc?
First you'll have to decide on what launch method to use, and buy the stuff needed, whether it's a mod-chip install or soft-mod discs. What I'm trying to do is use uLaunchELF to start SMS on my PS2 by putting it on my Memory Card, without any need for cds as my laser is stuffed.

Note that you can't use a DVD-R copy of SwapMagic (or similar) unless you already have a mod-chip. But if you do have a mod-chip that lacks Dev1 capability, then such a DVD-R disc would be possible solution.
But the best choice of all, if you don't mind the expense, is a good mod-chip with alternate boot capabilities such as DMS4 or Matrix Infinity, and some others. Just beware of cheap clones, as they always cause trouble sooner or later (most of those die if you try to change settings).

Cool, thanks for the response.
Yeah I already have a Messiah modchip installed, and last night I got this whole this working by assuming some things and getting them right.
I made a DVD with system.cnf, then the boot.elf (renamed to SLUS_200.00), then a folder with the SMS elf in it, and then the two dummy files.
Straight away put it into the PS2, and the uLaunchELF program started.
Then I just searched for the SMS elf in the folder and started running it.
Got it to work straight away for DVDs, although they were skipping a bit, so then I connected it to my LAN, set it up and got it working perfectly.
In the next couple of days I'm going to figure out how to put further elfs onto the memory card via the network, which i think is possible.
Thanks again for your help. I love this program.
why not just use a USB thumb drive?
anyway, to get the files on the MC over the network, just use the same method as to read the video files in SMS. in ulaunchELF, the network is found under HOST.
or you could start the FTP server that's in uLaunchELF, and login to it on your PC to transfer the files.
the USB storage is found under MASS.
Cool, thanks for that. I suppose using the USB would be much eaiser so I might give that a go.
Is all I have to do it locate the USB in uLaunchELF under the folder MASS, then find the elf file an "uncrush" it to the memory card.
That's what I've seen people do, but I can't remember if it's 100% correct.
How can I create dummy files? Or could i just put any file on the dvd? (I assume I need something over 1gb for the dvd iso?)
