I tried playing XviD videos thru a 100Mbps network. It works well for some, but not so well for others (stuttering, dropped frames). These aren't HD XviDs BTW, just typical ~1300Kbps bitrates.

Compared to a full-speed network, how is the performance if playing media off a USB stick?

yep network was not even bother to try with I kept getting lagged with vids. So I brought 1gb usb pendrive and was able to play 700mb (2 hours xivd anime) without any problem at all.

I never had a single problem with network performance, I personally only use Network and USB to play videos in SMS but I dont play many high bitrate movies so no problems. Let me just say that network playback in SMS is amazing, never thought it could be this good before I tried it.

Exactly what I think. I only use the network to watch films and hear mp3s. It works great for me. I use RadHostClient on the pc side and the performance is really good, although my pc and network are occupied with other things too almost all the time.
As for USB... it's only 1.1 so network should be faster anyway.

The poor performance J-SIN references can happen with some wireless network configurations. Wireless works for some people, and hardwired ethernet works for almost everyone.

I must be doing something wrong then. It just isn't smooth. Or maybe I'm just used to XBMC's performance?

    it´s probably the later, Maven.
In xbmc you can get around 7~8mbytes/sec transfer speeds, while ps2 can do 600~700kbytes/sec using the ps2client.
I use sms at home with a wireless connection, and i hardly have lag while watching movies streamed from my pc. Of course I don´t have a xbox to compare, but so far I´m pretty happy with my setup.

mojojojo, I'm curious. What wireless adapter do you have for the PS2? I have a Linksys Wireless-B Game Adapter and there seems to be buffering every couple of seconds.
