I have searched here and I know people have had the same problems, but I could not find an answer to my question. I have a 1GB Transcend usb drive formatted in FAT (and I tried FAT32 also). Using the latest version, SMS recognises the drive by displaying the media icon up the top, however as soon as i try to view the contents of the drive the system hangs with "reading media..." or whatever the text is. What is the cause of this and is there any way to fix it?

I understand SMS uses an internal usbd.ird from naplink, is it possible my drive is not compatible with this module, or is it the usbd_mass.irx causing problems? Also, is it possible to override the use of the internal usbd.irx module by putting a different version on the memory card?

    Your help is appreciated!

The first thing - read manual of SMS. One of the part try to solve Your problem: "SMS is capable of reading files from a USB drive, but due to liscencing issues, the USB driver USBD.IRX is not included with the SMS distribution. SMS looks for it in the following folders:
    host:USBD.IRX
    mc0:/BOOT/USBD.IRX
    mc0:/PS2OSCFG/USBD.IRX
    mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX
    mc0:/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
    mc0:/BOOT/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
    mc0:/SMS/USBD.IRX

So You have to find PROPER USBD.IRX for Your USB HDD. I have WesternDigital 250GB formatted in FAT32 (two partytions 100Gb+150Gb) and SMS is working without any problems...

    I suggest Tourist Trophy or GT4 USBD.IRX
    (will NOT work with PNY)

That's not true anymore, the USBD.IRX is included in the latest releases, since quite a few versions. You don't need an external USB driver anymore, it's all inclusive.

Those drivers are not recommended, they have a really bad compatibility with homebrew programs and most likely won't work at all. Try to use them with uLE and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Like I said above, SMS has internal drivers and doesn't load the USBD.IRX on your MC, that's why you don't have probs with SMS.

    @thedogcow & darkness369
It's not the USBD.IRX that's causing problems, it's the USB_MASS.IRX that's handling all operations with the USB drive, so your drives are not compatible to the USB_MASS.IRX. And it's not possible to set an external USB_MASS.IRX in SMS, so sadly no way to fix it.
But the USB drivers are still under development, so hopefully there will be a better compatibility in the future. All you can do is wait or get a new USB drive.

actually I've been using GT4 for my stick till Ule 4.01 release, since ever since then the standard ule one worked fine....

I found that worked for me when a whole lot of ohers didn't, this is why I recommended it (and did before, no prob at all)...so I can say: though I tried them with ule I don't know what you're talking about..

well, you' re prob right, though and I'm an exception...

Well, strangely I had this problem but only when there was no disc at the tray... Try to put a disc in the tray.

Strange, I tested the GT4 IRX with the result of a complete hang up. Maybe it's a combination of PS2 model, USB stick and drivers that causes it to hang or to work. I have one drive that works fine with my v12, but it refused to work on a v7. I used exactly the same uLE version, so it can't be due to the drivers. Well I guess it's more of a trial and error than of a hit and run.
