Do IDE HDDs in a USB Enclosure work with SMS?
I tried my friend's HDD but it didn't quite work, it showed the USB icon so the ps2 recognised it, but no files were showing, couldn't enter it.

I'm guessing its because its NTFS. Does SMS only read FAT32?
Is that the reason or is there something else I'm missing?

I don't think anyone can give you that guarantee. Many posters on the forum have working USB enclosures, and I don't recall any specific reports of incompatible models. If this is a big concern, perhaps you should try your friends again, or purchase from a source with a good return policy.

Also I think SMS will only be able to access the first logical partition, which must be fat32. I've got an external hdd enclosure, partition1=ntfs, partition2=fat32, sms can't see either of them.

I have a 200GB MAxtor HDD and it is partitioned to FAT32.I am able to access it with SMS and see the whole partition. I'm not sure exactly what brand my Enclosure is though. But even when just connecting the HDD with a USB to IDE connection I am able to view the drive with SMS.

    Regards,

There is a usefull app which lets you format drives larger than 32GB in WinXP. Available here.
