Thread: .sub subtitles?

  1. #1 .sub subtitles?
    sLdante Guest
I tried burning avi files with .sub subtitles (I read in the user manual that SMS supports .sub) and before it could load up the avi it said "invalid subtitle format, please press cross to continue", or something like that. I'm wondering if I convert the subtitles from .sub to .srt, if I can choose which one the avi file will use? Thanks.

the subtitle file's name must be the same as video file's name....for example, if the video file is ahmadka2.avi, then the subtitle file must also be ahmadka2.sub...otherwise it wont work...secondly, if SMS has detected the sub file, but cant recognise it...it probably means that either the subtitle file is corrupted, or the format is not actually sub, and is just renamed to sub or something like that....there are utilities avialable on the internet that can repair corrupted subtitles, and also convert the formats.....i know a few names, but the best program so far that i have used is probably Subtitle Workshop.....try it......and personally, i have always used the SRT subtitles, and they have never failed me....

I've used subtitles before (successfully with .sub and .srt), as well as with SMS (but only srt). My question is since it's burned on a dvd, the avi and the sub file will still be associated (same name), but if I additionally burned the .srt file, will SMS be able to use THOSE subtitles? Thanks.

/sub files need an .idx file and there are converted from dvd's . u need to convert te .sub and thwe .idx to .srt.

like admahka2 said. convert the sub file with "sub to srt"

sub files are actually a kind of jpeg files. u need to convert them to 'normal'' text files.

Um. My questions remains unanswered. Maybe I'm not being clear enough.

I have avi files and sub files burned on a DVD.
    Let's say Movie.avi, and Movie.sub.
Now, SMS won't let me play the .sub file, and that's ok. I would like to know if I BURN .srt subtitles (Movie.srt) onto that same disc, if I would be able to select that specific subtitle to be used (.srt) instead of the .sub.

(Also, the .sub and avi work perfectly on my pc.)
Thanks for the help so far.

When you want to use a specific subtitle out of several, or if the subtitle file doesn't have the same prefix name as the main movie file, then you should start the playing by pressing the 'Circle' button instead of the 'Cross' button, with the movie file selected.

This will bring up a selection box listing all the subtitles, and if you still don't see the one you need, just scroll down the list as it only has room for 7 files without scrolling. When you have the right subtitle selected just press 'Cross', and then the playing should commence as usual, with that subtitle active.

    That's not really relevant.
The PC players have support for many things we don't, and never will...
(For example: EEUG will never pay a license fee to microsoft just so he may use their proprietary formats.)

For the case of SUB subtitles, some of the others had it half right in saying that they are incompatible, because SUB is not one standard, but two different ones. One of them is based on simple text storage, like SRT but with a different syntax, and this type of SUB is supported by SMS.

But the other SUB standard uses a video substream as ripped from DVD movies, and is then always accompanied (or should be) by a similarily named IDX file. When used together these allow overlaying that video stream on top of the movie, just like it's done on DVD (almost). This standard is not supported by SMS as it would steal a lot of processing time needed for the main movie.

    Best regards: dlanor

Thank you dlanor, you answered my question with your first paragraph. As for stating that the sub and avi work on my pc, I was pointing out that they weren't corrupted.
    Again, thank you.
