i think evilo already ported libpng to ps2. just use that to let people add their own backgrounds to sms.

I think SMS should have a clean look, and smooth crisp icons. Not like the ugly PS2Reality Media Player. I'm not sure about the background music. It would be nice to have some music that you choose.

i think some of that is a bit of an overkill and may make this a big bloated. ive worked on and helped alot of people with their own user interfaces for the ps2. The best thing you can do is to keep it simple and give people the use of a simple format for the background.

@Riddik: looks really nice (just get rid of that "by EEUG" , otherwise put there all ffmpeg's contributors + 'weltall', 'dlanor', 'Mr.Worm~~' and others who helped in testing etc., since SMS would never come without them also, or, maybe we have to made separate 'About' screen). Now about real things: gradient background and ball's shadows can be drawn using PS2 drawing features, so no problem there. Balls themselves can be drawn by VU1, but it requires huge amount of programming and learning (all that lighting calculations etc., I know little about them), so usage of bitmaps can help, but what would be a size of them? SMS letters can be vectorized, so instead of having bitmaps we can use sequence of points which occupy much less memory. These were my remarks about "splash screen". For browser screen: remarks are basically the same + someone has to design and code browser's font (and test how it will look on a TV screen ). Of course, we can employ 'jpg' compression and use only bitmaps, so it would be easy to program and maintain, but again, 'jpg' decompressor must be added (it exists somewhere at SVN, so anyone is free to try ) and what to do with different screen resolutions (on NTSC or PAL bitmap can be stretched, so balls can become ovals, for example ). That were my suggestions. Thank you again....

Thank you for your appreciating and, please, accept my apologies for missing names of contributors to SMS project. I've designed the screens in Adobe Illustrator 10. The icons are grabbed with Print-Screen, cutted and trasparencied with Photoshop 7.
The resolution of images are 720x576 (PAL). Converting these images to 640x480 (NTSC) and, of course, respecting the aspect ratio is very simple for me. The font used by browser are pure indicative, you can use a "default" font (if exist) of the ps2.
About the JPG decompression: At www.ps2dev.org, in the "sample code" section, there is the JPEGReader, you can implement the code into your SMS, just try
I'm working on icons now. I suggest you to send me the "disclaimer" and "contributor" text. So I'll put these into the splash screen.
    Regards!

...PS2's ROM contains only one font and you see it in Station's browser and SMS. It is quite big (26 in height and variable in width), so it probably won't fit in your design. (attached file contains screendump of PS2's font (most "interesting" part of it (the rest are just eastern "symbols")), so maybe it will help you in your design). About icons: SMS uses ".raw" format (in Photoshop), with brightness adjustment set at very minimum WITH ALPHA CHANNEL. I have no idea about that "disclaimer" thingy , really...

    Hi!
There is a SMS-EXPLORER image with right font (the font used by ps2 into his browser...): should be ok for me.
I've prepared the icons. Just a question for raw parameters: are correct? Please see the attachment RAW-PARAMETER.jpg

    Regards!
