    The solution is called HALF DUPLEX !

    I run a home network connected to a dlink switch (separate from the router) and my faster pc with an intel 21xx based nic was acheiving bery bad speed.. same issue as you with the buffering pause at every 5 sec or so...

    Then on the other end, my slower pc in another room, was working perfectly with sms.. The only thing I saw different (apart from a very old nic (still had a coax port for ethernet 2mb!), is that the duplex was set hardcoded at halfduplex.

    So since, my present card in my fast pc did not had settings to force a duplex I changed it to a newer one...

    The new one had a speed/duplex and and set it up at 10Mb/s Half Duplex. Everything came back to normal and sms streams wonderfully...

    I<ve seen this in other part of my daily work... It seems that somehow the ps2 (half duplex) and your pc (auto sets at full duplex) are not able to negotiate properly the exchange of data, and this will cause excessive collisions. for exemple, if you had a 3 com network switch with the leds for the ammount of collisions on the network, you would have seen a christmas light show going on ! So this brings me to think that the PS2 has an half duplex nic and therefore you need your pc to "talk" the same way the ps2 does..

    let me know your results....

    no surprise here... Ethernet technology using utp cables is supported up to 100 Meters (+- 300 feet).

    Is it possible, that the length of my cables causes the speed-decrease?
    Hmm, mine is 18metres

    Barf... did you force your pc net card to 10Mb Half duplex ???

    This is the key... is you don't see this option, then get a new nic which you will...

    I have my PStwo connected to a wi-fi router and it plays perfectly all streams, no matter if I stream via wi-fi (to the pc in the other room) or via ethernet.

    In fact often I have this configuration:

    Master PC and PStwo connected directly to the router
    Laptop in the other room, running radhost, connected vai wi-fi, with shares, pointing to the master PC...

    So the playstation connects to the radhost on the laptop via wi-fi, the laptop serves the files wirelessly from the master pc and sends them to the pstwo.

    Quite complicated but works perfectly
