SMS from Memory Card? –
12-17-2008,04:14 PM
Hello all, I am new to this PS2-as-media-centre thing, but since a few days ago I am running SMS from my PS2 and feeling great about this amazing way to use PS2. With the help on this forum I had no trouble booting SMS (latest version from http://home.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/) from a CD and running media files through LAN.
I am just a bit annoyed that when the CD is in the PS2, it rotates all the time, thus creating a hsssssss sound. It is not very loud, but can be irritating. Can someone give me a short tutorial, or point me to a thread where I can learn how to run SMS from the Memory Card?
Thanks all, and stay well.

To run programs from your memory card you must have modchip with dev. modes feature or Free McBoot installed.
PS.After you load SMS you don't need the disk with the program anymore(sms goes in the ps2 ram and you don't need the disk until you reset your ps2)

Thanks for the reply. I have a PS2 with a modchip, how can I tell if it supports the necessary modes? If it doesn't, what is Free McBoot and how can I install it?
I know I will just have more questions, thanks for all the help

Thanks for the help. I bought my PS2 already modded, so I don't know what type the chip is. Nevertheless, I will try to make it happen with Free McBoot.
Another thing, when I start SMS, it shows the time in the down-right, but the time is wrong. I can't seem to find any options to change the time, is this something to change within SMS or somewhere natively in the PS2?
Thanks in advance, stay well.

If you start the console with empty disc tray you will reach a menu with two top level entries, those being "Browser" and "System Configuration". The latter of those commands leads to a series of submenus where you can set the clock and define which timezone it relates to as well as the current DST setting.
Those things also matter, and not just the straight clock setting, because (believe it or not) all PS2/PStwo consoles adapt their internal real-time-clock to those settings such that it will be running on Tokyo time. (No, I'm not kidding. All these consoles really do strive to use Tokyo time internally.)
This has caused many misunderstandings for homebrew users since the timestamps used for all files and folders are stored using the unaltered internal clock values (thus Tokyo time) and that is also the preferred timestamp value for homebrew programs to display (as it is the real stored value). But when you see the same timestamp in the Sony Browser it will be adjusted to the local timezone...
Best regards: dlanor
