    Hi.

This question might have been already answered and I apologize for that but I can't seem to get it right.

I've read the SMS Manual and trying to figure it out as I write this. My question is: How do you get the media on SMS?

I'm using a USB Stick btw. I've read the section. IE, this:

You can play audio and video files from a USB stick connected to the front of your PS2.

SMS is capable of reading files from a USB drive, but due to liscencing issues, the USB driver USBD.IRX is not included with the SMS distribution. SMS looks for it in the following folders:

    *

    host:USBD.IRX
    *

    mc0:/BOOT/USBD.IRX
    *

    mc0:/PS2OSCFG/USBD.IRX
    *

    mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX
    *

    mc0:/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
    *

    mc0:/BOOT/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
    *

    mc0:/SMS/USBD.IRX

A suitable version of USBD.IRX can be found within the distribution of naplink: naplink-ps2-v1.0.1a. This can be found at http://naplink.napalm-x.com/.

Download the above zip file, and open it up ? inside you will find a file called npm-usbd.irx. Copy this file to a local folder on your computer, then rename it to USBD.IRX (must be in capitals). Then use an FTP program or other method to copy the file to one of the above locations. Next time SMS starts up, it will have USB support enabled. You won't see any difference until you plug in a compatible USB drive. Then you will see a new icon as shown below. Press RIGHT to select this icon and browse the USB drive.
Most of it is going over my head. I have the file but it's not working for some reason. The file (USBD.IRX) is in the SMS folder under BM/APPS but still no luck. I know I'm doing something wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

From the Q&A SMS website :
    Q: USBD.IRX?

A: you don't need USBD.IRX anymore, it's built into SMS. but you can use your own if you need to. put it into the SMS folder on your memory card.

You can start USB support from the SMS menu. press start in SMS. it's under Device settings.
So, they say that they include the USB driver in the SMS ELF file. But if your stick is not recognized, you can try to put others USBD.IRX in the SMS folder. You can have better luck, or not...

Oh, I see. I'll be sure to try that.

But for media, do I need to have a specific folder or anything in BM/APPS/SMS, like 'MEDIA' or anything? Or, do I just randomly put files in? (video & audio)

    Thanks.

Ahh, I apologize for double posting but I just noticed we have a SMS forum. If a moderator can kindly move it there, then that'd be great.

all you need to do, is enable USB support from the menu, then put any FAT32 or FAT16 formatted USB drive into the PS2, and it should show up.

you can put the media in the USB drive however you like, any folder, any filename. SMS works fine with long filenames USB like that, and for most devices, it 'just works'. if your USB stick doesnt show up, try a slightly earlier version of SMS, 2.0 rev0, which is in the boot cd ISO's on the website, as i hear from two people whose devices stopped working as of 2.0 rev2.

I have a friend who has a USB drive (creative brand) that doesn't work, but mine (rundisk) does. USB external HDD's work too so long as they are formatted in FAT.

sorry about the user manual, it is massively out of date. we'll be putting up a WIKI soon, so that if someone sees something wrong or incorrect, they can update it on the spot.

    Ahh okay. I'll try that.

I tried activating USB from the "Device Settings," but all I got was "Locating USBD.IRX.." and nothing happened. It was like it hanged. Anything that I'm doing wrong? I have a Sony USB 2GB flash drive and I run SMS from the USB itself.

You must be using an old version of SMS, since the new versions have USBD.IRX embedded in the program. Get a newer version of SMS and this problem should disappear.

If you do wish to use an external USBD.IRX file with your old SMS version, then you should create a folder named "SYS-CONF" on the first memory card (aka "mc0:/") and store the IRX file there. That is the one and only *standard* location for it, supported by a majority of homebrew programs. (Nearly all that support USB in any way.)

But be aware that only a few IRX files from commercial games will work properly with homebrew programs. The ones that do not work will frequently just lock up, though I don't think that's the problem you saw, as I think that was simply due to the file not being found in the proper location.

Ahh. The version for SMS that I'm using is 2.0. Also, the downloads page on the SMS page has it in .ELF format and to be honest, I don't know how to make that work. I'd like SMS to boot from my USB since it's really easy than installing it to the MC because it takes space there.

Also, wouldn't I only need one USBD.IRX? Since, I'm only using it for SMS (to play audio/video).

Thanks for all the help; really appreciated.

Then it must be misconfigured, as that version should not need to load any external USBD.IRX driver. I use it myself without any such file, and it works fine here. I've also tested (redundantly ) that I can disable the USB interface, then reboot SMS and enable it again, without ever seeing the message you mention, so something weird is happening at your end.

Also, the downloads page on the SMS page has it in .ELF format and to be honest, I don't know how to make that work.
There's nothing special to know about that. Assuming you have a normal web browser you just right-click on the file link and choose to download the file. And once you have it, you just copy it to the PS2 media where you want to run it from.

I'd like SMS to boot from my USB
The PS2 is not capable of booting from USB. Not even with any existing mod-chip. For booting you must use some other method, though the program booted that way may of course launch SMS from USB if you like.

since it's really easy than installing it to the MC because it takes space there.
Nevertheless, there is no way to boot directly from USB.

The closest you can get to that is with SwapMagic, though you'll still be booting a CD/DVD disc then, which in turn can launch a program from USB. Another close runner-up is DMS4pro, which can boot directly from internal flash memory of the mod-chip, using an ELF you can install there yourself.

Otherwise the preferred boot method is to boot a generic file manager (such as uLE) from the memory card, and then use it to launch any specific applications such as SMS, from whatever media you have those programs stored on, including USB, network, etc...

    Also, wouldn't I only need one USBD.IRX?
What I meant earlier was that you don't even need one such file with the new versions, since the default IRX is now built into the SMS program.

So I should install SMS on my MC and then boot from there?
