SMS 1.9 on SM 3.6 DVD-R
SMS 1.9 on SM 3.6 DVD-R –
i have read the faq for a while now and haven't found my answer. i have burned sms1.9 rev2 on to a dvd-r; 4x with imageburn. i boot swapmagic 3.6 dvd, swap for sms, and load. From there, how can I swap the sms disc for my divx movies on data dvd-r's?
Technique may vary depending on your model of PS2, but I just swap discs, press Right on the d-pad to switch to the media selection window and load the new disc.
Why do that?
If you have Swapmagic 3.6 just upload sms.elf to one of your memorycards renamed to mc0:/SWAPMAGIC/SWAPMAGIC.ELF
i have a slim v14 ps2, any difference?

There are lots of tools which can do it, but the one I'd recommend is uLaunchELF. (Available in another subforum on this site.)

I'd suggest using uLE for one of those ELFs too, of course.
With SwapMagic 3.6 you don't even have to make any boot CD at all, since that version also supports identical use of a "SwapMagic" folder on a USB storage device, which you can prepare on a PC. Then have that USB drive in the PS2 when booting SwapMagic, and it will let you start uLE from the USB drive. And then you can use uLE to copy that "SWAPMAGIC" folder to your memory card, so you don't need to have the USB device connected to boot those ELFs in future sessions.
Your user manual for SwapMagic v3.6 has detailed instructions for the filenames to be used inside the SWAPMAGIC folder, and which gamepad buttons you should press to launch each of those files, so I won't repeat all that info here.
I'll just say that you should avoid using the method intended for a single program, renamed to "SWAPMAGIC.ELF". The reason why you should avoid that method is because it eliminates all user choices. You can't even choose to skip ELF launching to do normal SM swapping with such a program installed on your MC, as that ELF will be launched without waiting for any response from you...
That problem doesn't exist if you use the ELF names intended for multiple program use, even if you only install one of them, so that is the better method. It always waits for gamepad input before launching anything, so you can also choose to skip ELF launching when you want to do normal SM swapping instead.

I'm using a v15 PSTwo - so I don't think there will be any difference. After swapping, press Right and then X to mount the new disc. Hope this works for you too - I don't need the CDDA or DVD-Video tricks to read CD-R or DVD-R.

Media files can also be placed on a remastered SMS DVD-R, but then apparently your filenames must obey $ony's restrictions in order for the disc to remain valid.
thx very much for the help dlanor.
i understand that mc method now. but since i already burned sms to dvd-r, i just want to clarify if its still possible to swap for my movies after sms has loaded...is it??
I have, without any problems, in order to use pre-existing CD-Rs & DVD-Rs with media content. The mc method is great once you get it installed, since it will save you one disc swap. Loading from USB is a little easier to pull off and has the same advantage. Good luck!
then again, if you have a USB drive to put swap magic elf file onto, why not just put your movies onto that as well?
well you see juddman, i have a couple dvd-r's that have divx movies that total up to 4gigs. my usb is not that big, so i wanted to see if swapping was possible. thanks a bunch for the confirmation delta 9.
