    i am using new SMS version which has SMB. I set the config of SMS.smb

    my computer IP
    my computer name (in uppercases, although it has "-" and numbers in it dont know if it make any difference)
    my ps2 (although i am assuming i can make up any name for it? please correct me if that is wrong thanks)
    my username for pc (also has "-" in it as well
    my password for pc

    i change the SMS conf for network to SMB/(something i dont remember) then when i try start the network,

    nothing shows up. no error, no "icon" appears. nothing. not sure what i am doing wrong because i have no way of finding the source of problem at all.

    so when i went back to change it back to normal network, i can't find that option at all!

    btw i am using XP Home.

    thanks!

    Some users, even very experienced ones, have found it impossible to make this Samba stuff work right, while others with seemingly similar setups have succeeded without any problems (like me). Possibly this feature needs some more testing time before we learn all the possible pitfalls.

    But you can easily get your old settings back, so you can go back to using the Host interface. It's just that you have to do it in a few steps, because there is no direct command to turn off the network support that you have already activated for SMB, and it must be turned off before you can choose the other network alternative. So here's what you need to do:

    Boot up and launch SMS and Press 'Start' to navigate to 'Device Settings'
    Move cursor to the green 'tick' at "Autostart Network" and change that
    Press 'Triangle' to back out, and use "Save Settings" plus "Exit SMS"
    Restart SMS and again press 'Start' to navigate to 'Device Settings'
    Network protocol should be visible, with SMB selected, so change that
    Then change the 'Autostart network' setting to a green 'tick' again
    Next use the "Start network support" command and then back out (Triangle)
    Finally use the "Save settings" command again, and back out of the menu

    This should leave you back where you were before testing Samba, with the Host interface selected and active, and also autostarted each time you run SMS.

    Best regards: dlanor

    I'm able to make it work with Linux, but not with Windows( 2k3 server, XP Pro both failed;
    however I read about a fix here somewhere, registry? or something like that... ).

    And some people are talking about entries in lmhost... some config file under windows?

    @J-SIN: ..."Show Nothing" means that it's not even possible to make TCP/IP connection to the PC (at least if you wait at least ~1 min after network support start);
    @barf: ...I don't know, since here it started working from the very first try;

    Sounds like we're in the same boat. XP Pro SP2 and XP Media Center Edition SP2 won't work here either but Linux works great.

    The two most important things to note in regard to settings:
    1). NetBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled.
    2). The computer name must be in all caps in the SMS.smb file.

    I've heard nothing about any registry hacks or anything quite like that. My lmhosts and hosts files are all the same for both XP and Linux so that can't be it.

    Here is my situation does it match with your MS OS's?
    Checked 'Sessions' under 'Shared Folders' and the user stays connected for 4 seconds. Then the user reconnects for another four seconds then leaves or is disconnected, which starts this process over again. All the while this is happening I see with netstat -an that the port the ps2 connects with is changing after each drop. Also I see the SMS SMB share icon flicker as it looses the connection with the PC and tries all over again.

    Sessions:
    Code:
    User	Computer	Type	# Open Files	Connected Time	Idle TIme	Guest
    TEST	PS2		Windows	0		00:00:04	00:00:04	No
    A file is never opened but then again the connection isn't probably established long enough to open a share or a file.

    No simple file sharing and no Windows Firewall enabled. If I were to wager a guess, I would say that XP is closing the door.

    @J-SIN

    AFAIK, WinXP Home doesn't allow to easily enable advanced sharing (it has simple sharing enabled by default and it won't let you change it). You can enable it and configure shares in recovery mode (failsafe mode or whatever the english name is) and they will stay when you reboot (but you won't be able to easily change them until once again in safe mode). I've seen somewhere a registry hack to do it, but you will have to search it on your own.

    Simple sharing will not work at the moment.

    edit:
    All the problems some people are getting with this smb client seem a little bit weird to me. For me it worked on linux, WinXP Pro SP2, WinXP MCE SP2 (almost same as pro plus mce2005), vista ultimate (final, 30day trial on VMWare and same but on my friend's pc). In all cases I didn't have to configure anything except for the new user account I created for ps2 on windows systems.

    @E P: ...btw., SMS sends 'echo' request to the server each 4 secs (4096ms, more exactly) while in browser to check if the server is still alive. If this request fails then it closes the connection and tries a new one. I think you're experiencing just that. Look at the screenshot of the 'ethereal'...

    Ok, thanks for the pic. I have downloaded wireshark but haven't installed it yet. If I can't figure out my problem with XP within the next few days, I'll install it and try it out. I just hope it doesn't make a mess of my machine. 65MB for a standard install seems like a bit much.

    I wanted to post a probable solution for many folks who are experiencing login error (5) on the samba mount:
    For login error (5) and event ids in security log (if logging) 529 and 680.
    Information from:
    hxxp://forums.techguy.org/networking/452497-dos-client-cannot-connect-xp.html

    To fix the problem you must locally store the correct password hash:
    control panel/administrative tools/local security policy
    Local Policies/Security Options
    Network security: Do not store LAN Manager hash value on next password change = Disabled

    Login to your XP system as the user you have for samba sharing and change password (this stores the lan manager password hash on your Windows XP system where it was not being stored previously). Then update SMS.smb with this new password and run SMS.

    @EEUG, dlanor, and EP - hope this works because I love your updates and hate to see time spent in troubleshooting!
