The majority of my .avi files will not play. Some of them start to play and you can hear the audio but the video freezes and the audio keeps playing for a while then freezes up and sometimes sms starts the video in black and white. Anyone no what could cause this or is it just bad encoding?

Use GSpot to find out what video and audio codecs are used by your files.

Those codecs should work. Does the video play properly on your computer? Does GSpot give any errors or warnings in the 'Container' pane?

The videos play perfect on the computer and even on ps2 reality media player, just no sms, im also streaming the videos off the computer if that would make a difference.

    Container:
    AVI v1.0
    DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI
    Interleave: 83 ms (2.5 v.frames)
    Audio frames: Split across interleaves
    File Length Correct

I have 43 dvd rips all ripped the same and they dont work

dont waste your time on making clips, just pass once with virtualdubmod (direct stream copy) and the problem will be fixed, 30 seconds...like magic
Those files ripped in that container wont work, maybe ps2r supports bad interleaved movies, SMS dont...so to fix all your bad movies you need about an hour...

You dont have any loss in quality. The streams are not reencoded, but just copied (therefor "direct stream copy") into a new file. That's why it's so fast.
