Hi. Firstly I would like the thank Eugene for creating an excellent piece of software. However, I have a problem when playing xvid movies. Roughly once a second the picture freezes momentarily, only for a fraction of a second, but enough to be annoying, the sound is fine. I have tried playing the same files via hdd, usb and network and I always get the same problem. Here are the details of a typical file: 528 x 288 pixels. 112kbps bit rate. mpeg audio. 23 frames/sec. 105kbps data rate. 12 bit. xvid compression. The same files play fine on my PC and standalone divx player (which I was hoping to replace with my PS2 and SMS) Can anyone help? Regards Dene.
Hi Lee99. In this example the picture freezes momentarily, 6 times while the camera pans from left to right. Dene.
Yes, that is correct, and it is a known problem with videos like this one, that have a framerate which doesn't match either PAL (25) or NTSC (30) standards, having in this case a rate of 23.976 frames per second. Even rounding that to 24 still forces SMS to duplicate one frame per second (for PAL), thus leading to a small 'jerk' in the continuity of any motion.
Other methods for framerate compensation have also been discussed previously, but at present SMS relies on simple duplication/deletion of frames to achieve the rate needed for your TV.
The effect will be slightly less noticeable for NTSC, due to its higher framerate, even though the number of duplicate frames also increases because of that.
Btw: The 6 'freezes' you mention are in fact at least 8 for PAL mode, though the early ones are hidden by the lack of continuous motion during the first seconds.
For best playback in SMS you need to convert your videos to use the same framerate as you've set in the display settings of SMS, and if you use the "Auto" setting this means the standard framerate of your console/TV. For PAL this is 25 frames per second (50 half-frames when interlaced).
