Poor playback over network
Poor playback over network –
05-09-2006,09:12 PM
I have set up SMS to browse my shared folders over the network using RadHostClient, and I am able to select my avi files and begin playing them, but once they begin playing my controller goes dead and the video freezes up about every 5 seconds to buffer. Between the freezes the playback is smooth, but it is still unwatchable because of the constant pauses. I have tried playing the same files off of my hdd and my usb flash drive and they playback perfecty, I am able to control the volume and playback with the controller and there are no freezes. My ps2 is networked with my pc through a logitech play link wireless bridge into a router which connects with my pc wirelessly. I am using RadHostClient 1.5 with Windows XP Pro and SMS 1.7 rev2. If anyone has this same problem or could offer some advice about how to get smooth playback and controller support when playing avi files over the network, I would greatly appreciate it.

The latest version of RadHostClient is 1.7, but I would guess that the 2 wireless connections to your router is your bottleneck. Try plugging your PC directly into your router.

i am having same problem but with RHC 1.7 (and SMS 1.7 rev.3) and its connected thru ethernet hub.
i checked to make sure its playable by putting the vid by putting it in hd and has no problem but since it takes way too long to transfer thru FTP. so i would have prefer to use RHC but it doesn't work well for some reason.
any advice would be greatly appreciated as well.

Anyone can help me?
From what I read about RHC and connected non-wireless routers seems to work well whilst mine doesn't. Does it have to be mod-chip ps2? Or that shouldn't matter?
Unless there is limited of size files? Avis I want to watch is range from 140-300mb. Is that too large of file to be used from RHC?
Thanks in advance.

The filesize is not very important. Have u tried reading the SMS' Manual instructions on this subject? If not, try that. Otherwise u should specify ur problem more.

Yah. I have read sms manual over and over before posting on here. And I even re-read after your post and still can't find why it would make vid so choppy like its not buffering up enough on time. I can connect via pc and ps2 with no problem. Even no problem with ulaunchELF (although itis pretty slow transfering files) with using RHC host.
I am thinking maybe it HAVE to be crosswire ethernet for it to play smooth? Because I am using hub?
Just making note of what is my problem is.
I was able to connect to my pc by host RHC, then click play. It loads up. Then play for few seconds then stop for seconds then play then stop. It goes on and on.
I don't care if it can't be fixed anymore but I would like know why its doing that tho. Please let me know. Thanks in advance!

It's not the crossover cable, it should play fine trough the hub.
Anyways, google for GSpot (if u dont have it already) and post the info about the movie here if u don't mind. Maybe it's very high bitrate or something.

Having the same issue –

I'm haveing the same issues with my sms playing through a network the avi files will play but after a few seconds or so the video will pause and then start working again. I thought this was just an inherent issue with streaming from the computer but if other people are able to stream the videos with out the pausing I would like to know what I'm doing wrong as well. I downloaded GSpot and checked one of the avi files that I tried to stream off the hard drive of my computer and it didnt find any problems also when I put the avi on my hdd running on my ps2 it plays with no problems. Could it have anything to do with me running sms off of the hdd as well instead of the MC?

@f8sjstr
if your videos work fine off the HD, then your problem must be your network performance (throughput). It is possible to acheive smooth network playback of the maximum quality videos that SMS can handle. Can you measure the transfer rate you get with LaunchELF when doing a Host copy from PC->HDD? You may be able to confirm that network speed is your problem.
