Network Problem : Can't ping PS2
Network Problem : Can't ping PS2 –
08-12-2006,10:04 PM
Hi Guys,
I'm having a problem setting up the networking with SMS. Actually I can't get the network setup with other programs either (such as myPS2).
Here's what is happening. I have a crossover cable setup with my computer. The cable is working fine, as I usually share my wireless internet with my other computer on this cable. When I start SMS and the network initializes, my computer's LAN changes from unplugged to active. It gets assigned the server ip (192.168.0.1), but I am unable to ping my PS2.
In SMS, if I try to edit ipconfig.dat and save, it gives an error. It says "saving.." and then "Error (press "cross" to continue)..."
My PSTwo is brand new, and I'm using Swap Magic 3.6 to boot SMS off my memory card.
If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

you need to run PS2CLIENT on your PC, and I'm sure you'll find how it works, it's easy.

Pinging the PS2 doesn't require any software to be running on the computer. If the PS2 actually gets an IP address it should answer to ICMP ping packet. It sounds like it doesn't have one.

Thanks for the responses guys..
Yea I thought that I should be able to still ping my ps2 without the server stuff running. I tried it with it running, and still no luck...
I have no idea if the ps2 is actually getting an ip address. I'm guessing somehting is going on because my computer gets one when I load up sms, but something is still wrong.
Any ideas on what I can check or how I can go about troubleshooting this? I can't seem to get the network stuff working for any programs...

The PS2 has no software to acquire an IP address by the means normally used by PCs (DHCP protocol). Instead we always use static IP, and this is normally stored in a file called IPCONFIG.DAT in the folder mc0:/SYS-CONF/, where software like SMS can find it.
You can check/edit IPCONFIG.DAT from the submenu "Device settings..."/"Edit IPCONFIG.DAT..." inside SMS. Here you can see both the IP used for the PS2 by SMS, and the IP which SMS expects the PC to use. (Actually the latter is the 'Gateway' address, so if you have a router that could be the gateway.)

Yea I've looked in the file through SMS. THe problem though is that the information there is correct. However, I can't change it even if I wanted to. When I try to update/save, it gives an error.
The settings in there are (PS2):
IP: 192.168.0.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
The settings on my host computer:
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
I went looking for IPCONFIG.DAT in mc0:/SYS-CONF/ and I can't find it. Is SYS-CONF a hidden folder or something? I don't see the folder anywhere. If it's not there, maybe that's the problem. Can somebody maybe attach it, and then i'll transfer it on to my mc?

No. To a proper filemanager there is no such thing as a hidden folder, and in any case SYS-CONF is intended to be a perfectly normal folder. You probably just don't have it. It is a homebrew standard, so no Sony software creates it for you.

I don't understand your problem with creating the folder yourself. Surely the same tool you use to look for files inside folders can also create new folders... Right ?
If not, then perhaps you need to get yourself a good filemanager first, before you try to use SMS, because you'll always need a filemanager anyway, for normal system maintenance. I strongly recommend uLaunchELF, for all PS2 file management.
Once you have created a folder with the proper name "SYS-CONF", then SMS will be able to save the IPCONFIG.DAT file there, and perhaps that will make it somehow complete the network setup better. (I never tried to use defaults without any file, so I don't know if that works at all.)

Hmmm. Ok so I created the SYS-CONF folder, and now SMS can save/update the ipconfig.dat file.
However, still no luck with pinging the ps2 or anything. The only thing that has changed is that I can change the ipconfig.dat file....
any other ideas?

Sorry, but I'm running low on those now.
With properly configured IP at both ends, the PC should be able to ping the PS2 as long as SMS is running. That works fine for me.
Edit:
I just remembered something:
In the same "Device Settings..." submenu where you find "Edit IPCONFIG.DAT..." there is also an entry at the top saying "Autostart network" and to the right of it you'll either have a red X (meaning OFF) or a green tick (meaning ON). You need that setting to be ON, and when you back out of that submenu you should use the "Save settings" command, of course, so that this activates automatically on the next boot.
I hope this was what you needed, because otherwise I'm stumped...

Hmm ok. Well for kicks, i just tried it with my router and it worked. Odd though, because I just my crossover cable to another computer and that worked... Crossover cable with SMS is still not wokring though... Oh well, I guess I should just be happy it's working.
Thanks for the help guys!
