You have to configure and start the network connection in SMS.
Launch SMS and push START to get to the Config Menu. Go to Device settings --> Network settings, set the Network protocol to ps2dev/host and edit the IPCONFIG.DAT: IP Adress is the IP of your PS2 (e.g. 192.168.0.10 / 192 is octet1, 168 is octet2, etc.), Net Mask should be 255.255.255.0 and Gateway Adress is the IP of your Router (e.g. 192.168.0.1). Enter the values and make sure you assign an unused IP to the PS2 (check the router config to see which IPs are used or reserved in your network). Save the changes and then start the network support in the device settings (you may also want to enable Autostart network). Finally save the SMS config and restart SMS if you still can't connect to your PC.
Also make sure that you enter the correct IP (the one you entered in IPCONFIG.DAT) in PS2ClientGUI.

Turn off your Windows firewall and try to play around with the negotiation settings in SMS.
Double check the IP settings and make sure the IPs fit. If your router has 192.168.0.1, your PS2s IP has to be 192.168.0.XXX, if your router has 192.168.178.1 (e.g. FritzBox), your PS2s IP must be 192.168.178.XXX (first 3 octets have to be the same). Check if your router is listing the PS2 as network device when you start the SMS network support. Make sure the cables you're using are ok and that they are normal LAN cables (not cross over cables).
If you're using Windows Vista try to use the RadHostClient, AFAIK PS2Client is not working correctly under Vista.
That's all I can think of right now. Good luck.

ok, so i have ftp working ok and can transfer files to and from the ps2.
I have a router (192.168.1.1)
An XP constantly on pc (192.168.1.5) i use this as a server for all the files that my other computers download to ie: films and music.
An XP laptop (192.168.1.13) wireless ip
all are on subnet 255.255.255.0
my SMB.sms file is 192.168.1.1
HILTON SERVER
Playstation2
i have configured the ipconfig in SMS to ps2- 192.168.1.15
subnet- 255.255.255.0
gateway- 192.168.1.1
Network protocol set to ps2dev/host in SMS
My router reconises the playstation ip on the network but does not show a name?
All firewalls are off
Still no luck, I hope i have been as informative as i can and hope even more that i'm not annoying the informed ones too much.
Cheers

Seems like you've got a few wires crossed so to speak, if you set the PS2, to ps2dev/host then it expects to share via ps2link or Radhost on the PC. If you use the SMB way it expects to see XP "shared" folders/files
If you've setup and copied a SMB file to the PS2, then you need to tell the PS2 to use the SMB setup, NOT ps2dev/host, change this option to activate the SMB file you created..
If you want to use the host method, Are you then running Radhost or PS2client on the PC, remember with Radhost, it needs the PS2 ip typed into the box and folders/files you wish to share dragged into the window?
The PS2 needs to know what you want to play..
If you use the samba way then dont forget to share the folders in XP!

Thanks for straightening that out but again i still got nothing, I briefly fired up the ps2client gui on xp laptop(192.168.1.13) and then went to ulauncher and looked up host in there but it was blank.
I'm gonna stick with the SMB protocol now though as this seems like the best way to integrate the ps2 with my network.
The network part is the only reason i'm modding the ps2 as i dont have time to play games anymore(wife+5month old girl+another on the way) so i really really want to get this working. I'm an IT man through and through but this has me well and truely stumped.
I find it really frustrating because like i say i can ping the ps2 and connect to it via ftp no problems.
I have alot of windows network shares, would this make a diffrence?
Also even though i'm going through a router does the smb ip address need to be 192.168.1.1(router) ? or should it be 192.168.1.5(sharing xp pc) ?
Thanks again for all the input, I wouldn't have gotten this far without you good people.

My little girl can now watch in the night garden to her hearts content without me having to burn them to dvd. bliss
I have my cable tv box patched into the capture card on my server so that we can watch tv on the computers around the house via VLC media player over http protocol and was wandering if the ps2 could pick this up aswell ?
I love my new toy, Its really got me thinking on what i can do next lol
