I hope you are aware that SMS will only keep contact with one Samba server at a time. So while you do have contact with the PC, you will not have contact with the NAS drive, and vice versa. The same also applies when you have more than one computer in a LAN, as SMS is only capable of maintaining contact with one of them at a time.
In order to switch which computer or NAS you want SMS to communicate with using Samba, you must each time go into the SMS menu and use "Device Settings..."/"Network Settings..."/"SMB server..." of the SMS menu and choose the one Samba server to be used for the time being. That choice will then apply until you make a new such selection for a different server.
You probably knew that stuff already, but many users miss this limitation, thinking they can access many servers at once just like you can do from a PC.
Remember also that SMS is not intended to use any special "media server" features. What you need is a straightforward Samba fileshare, just as you get when streaming files from the PC. So if it is possible to turn off any special server features of the NAS, so that it only participates on the LAN by normal file sharing, that would be ideal for use with SMS.

You are right dlanor, I have jumped to the conclusion that he was using one of the clients rather than just a shared folder and native SMB when previously streaming the files from his PC.
Hopefully shutting down the Twonky server will solve this problem. He can currently see his files on the NAS but is getting an "unsupported file type" message. I believe this means that he has his *.SMB file set up correctly and it's pointing at the NAS200.
@tom233
If shutting off Twonky does not work then can you please clarify how the PC file sharing setup was working before you switched to the NAS200?

I have shutdown the media server. but no luck i am only trying to use one server at a time. my goal is to have the pc off all together and share the files from the nas to the
ps2. I have of course changed the settings in sms. and changed them back to the address of the pc for now. It doses not make any since to me. but it wont play music
mp3 or pictures or video. all of which will play fine from the pc hard drive. I tried mapping the nas to the pc and use it that way (with the pc running) but that doses not work as the ps2 cant not see a mapped drive. And you are right i am just using a share
not any type of client.

Ok, good. We can eliminate Twonky as the source of your woes.

Video streaming without a PC involved is exactly what led me to the exploit and SMS so you are on the right track.

What version of SMS are you running?
I'm still on 2.5r4. I could try a later version to make sure there's nothing going on there.
What format (FAT32, NTFS, EXT) are the drives attached (or inside) your NAS?
Can you clarify whether with your WinXP PC that you can access the NAS drive(s) and open the files? (I assume that's how you got the files there anyway.)

I am running sms version 2.9rev A
the drive in the nas according to windows is ntfs.
yes I can access the drive from windows and it shares and plays files with other pc,s
on my network.
I have all of them off now except one while I am working on this problem.
the built in tools of the nas is what was used to format the nas drive non journal
so I don't think it is actually ntfs but right clicking on the drive porperits says ntfs.
I thought it was ext2. the os (what there is of it in the nas is linux based).
I have set out to recreate the error message when playing from pc. by trying to break what is working i might find the problem. not sure
thanks for sticking with me and trying to help

Well that proves that all the parts work but just not together the way we want them.
In addition to being on a different SMS version my disks are formatted ext3. It's pretty clear the disk format isn't an issue since you can get to and stream from them using radhost.
I'm going to try SMS 2.9 this weekend and I'll let you know how I fare using it against my NAS. I have a slim PS2 that I want to try the FMCB exploit on and I'll install SMS 2.9 when I do that. I've been away from the PSx-scene for a few months and was pleased to read that someone has found a way into the later models. Also not having to have a boot disk in the machine is a nice plus.

@tom233: I did the SMS 2.9r1 install and it's working fine with my NSLU2 NAS and USB attached drives. These drives are formatted EXT3 by the NAS but from Windows they do appear as NTFS similar to what you mentioned below.
It seems like there is something in the NAS that is causing the issue. This won't tell you were the problem is but it would be interesting to know if SMS could read a drive that is connected to one of the NAS200 USB ports. That might further isolate it to something with the way the internal disks are being managed or formatted by the NAS200 OS.

I have been using xp and sharing off my pc. but i bought a nas200 network drive. I changed the smb config file to the ip address of the networkdrive and also to the name. it shows a network connection but no files are listed.
it is a linksys nas200
any help would be appericated
more info i added user name and password to smb file and it now sees the media files but gives a
unsuported file type error. (but these are the same files I can play on the ps2 with sharing from a pc hd. ) ;but now on the network drive it says unsupported file type.
thank you
I have the same problem. My PS2 SMS player works fine with my PC, but when I first tried to connect my NAS network drive (Maxtor Shared Storage II) with the sms player through the smb file with username and password I could see the media files but could not play them and got the same error msg saying unsupported file type. I could play the same files on my PC and also on the sms player through radhost or ps2client or even usbdrive.
Now I cannot even get to the media files. My sms player / ps2 just hangs when I switch on network support on the sms player. I tried copying a new smb file, but sms player will just hang. It will work fine if i change the smb file to access my PC though but hangs if I try to make it connect to my network drive (NAS). Strange, anyone with any workaround or a solution for this?
