Installing SMS via bootable cd
Installing SMS via bootable cd –
06-04-2007,12:39 PM
I burned LaunchELF with SMS.elf (SMS Version 2.2 (Rev.2).elf) on a bootable cd, inserted the cd in the ps2, booted, and copied SMS.elf via LaunchELF to my memorycard (mc0:\SMS\SMS.ELF).
I restarted the ps and took the cd out, browsed to my memorycard, but it can't read any data? It says that there's corrupted data on the card..
I've followed the tutorial, but instead of using the ftp to copy the SMS.ELF to the memorycard I used a bootable cd..
What did I do wrong?
thx

The Sony browser will say that about any content on a PS2 memory card which is not a folder containing a valid "icon.sys" file pointing also to a valid icon file. So if you have a folder without those files in it, or even some file straight in the MC root directory, Then the Sony browser will display that content as 'corrupt' and refuse to handle them for normal copying to other MCs etc.
With recent versions of uLE you can easily fix that problem by using its browser to go inside such a folder, and there issue the command R1/New Icon, which will then prompt you to enter two strings. The first one is the gamesave 'title' that will be displayed as a normal text string in the Sony browser when selecting that icon, while the second one is a string that will be displayed on the icon itself, as white text on a black square.
That second string will be split into 4 lines of 8 characters each, so if you plan it properly you can get reasonably good 'centering' of the text. So if you just want the letters SMS to be shown on the icon, starting in the third character position of the second line, then you can enter a string consisting of 10 spaces followed by the three letters SMS. Note that the number of spaces used has no effect on the storage size of the icon file, though visible text does increase the size slightly. (Icons are only packed by RLE methods.)
I've followed the tutorial, but instead of using the ftp to copy the SMS.ELF to the memorycard I used a bootable cd..

I don't think you have any real problem. The only thing you did wrong was to expect the Sony browser to give you a clear picture of things. Homebrew programs will always run without concern for 'corruption' of the type described above (unlike real corruption), so fixing this by creating icons as described is really optional.

thanks for the fast response, I'll try that out
Ok, it changed into a black box with SMS in it.
But, I thought it was possible to run SMS directly from the memorycard, but I assume I can't just insert any cd/dvd with divx-movies on them? I need to burn the SMS.ELF on it as well?

Well, how you can or can't boot SMS depends on what mod-chip you have, if any. (I assume you have one since you mention booting burned discs.)
Some modchips have so-called 'Dev' modes, which allow them to boot homebrew programs from non-CDVD devices, such as MC (Dev1) or HDD (Dev2) or even from storage inside the modchip's flash memory (DevFLASH, only available on DMS4 afaik).
For most such cases it is possible to boot SMS by those means, although most people prefer to boot a generic launcher instead, like uLE, since that can allow all other homebrew programs (including SMS of course) to be launched from it, using any PS2 devices that it supports (MC, CDVD, USB, HDD, networked HOST).
But if you don't have 'Dev' mode support in your modchip then you'll always have to use a boot CD/DVD to get started, and again it makes sense to use a single boot disc with a program like uLE on it, as that saves you from having to make separate boot discs for each homebrew program you want to use.

Again, thanks for the info.
The chip I've installed is a Matrix Infinity (v1.93).
I've noticed that there also is a Dev version of the infinity so I think mine won't support it.
So, for example, if I want to burn a divx movie called "Movie" on a CD to play it in my ps2, I have to put the Movie.avi (duh) and SMS.ELF on the disc, and it will load SMS wich loads the movie?

Seems like the MI is able to boot with Dev1
Renamed the SMS.ELF to BOOT.ELF and copied it to MC0:\BOOT
Divx runs smooth
thx for the help
