SMS is an excellent program. and thanks to the people behind it, no longer do we have to risk breaking our disc tray! and it's amazingly simple and easy.

How to make a PS2 Readable DVD-R to play in SMS

    1. start nero, chose to create a DVD-Video disc.

    2. Fill the VIDEO_TS folder with these dummy DVD files... (or any correct format dvd files)

    3. Fill the rest of the disc with your avi files. they can go anywhere except the VIDEO_TS folder... you can make your own folders too.

    4. Burn it. that's it!

JuddMan, Are you saying this allow you to launch homebrew stuff from DVD? I have been toying with this idea, as most newer PS2s will read home made video DVDs, but could not figure out how to get the files to execute.

No. Only SMS media player so far that i know of will read the data files on a dvd-video disc (and SMS doesn't launch elfs)... but yes, you can just push eject, put in the dvd you burned with a 10-second movie, and access any other files that happen to be on it from SMS... it's a normal official format, they use it all the time on movie discs to pack PC extras. eg. the Shrek 1 DVD... there's PC programs on it.

this would be a wonderful thing to add to LaunchELF i have to say, as i prefer to copy the avi's to my hdd before watching it (25 minutes of copying vs 10 hours of play on the laser...)

I just have to say that's really clever, and works beautifully! It works with single-layer DVDRs, but I'm curious if it works with dual layer, too.

Does anybody know if there's a similar solution for reading DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs in PS2Menu? You say this trick only works in SMS, and I don't suppose you can burn a CDDAFS or UMCDR disc on DVD media. Thanks!

no... not anymore at least. UMCDR is gone from LaunchELF... and StingArmy, of course a CD Audio format will not go onto a DVD...

the DVD-Video format is sorta the same thing as CDDAFS i guess... but dvd video discs have always had support for files and folders on the video discs alongside the video so it's an official supported format already

It seems from the LaunchELF forums that the people working on it are looking into the method SMS uses to read the DVD's and are interested in making it work with LaunchELF... if this happens it will be a wonderful thing for us owners of un-modded consoles.

though it seems there're a few compatibility issues that won't make it a simple swap over...

Awesome find JuddMan, I have an unmodded PS2 myself.

Now if an unmodded PS2 can read this DVD-R using this method, would it be possible to write a launch program that can run a modified ISO (which these dummy files) burned to a DVD-R on an unmodded PS2? Or am I just thinking crazy here haha.

...it seems that this becomes an off-topic not related to SMS at all. Sorry, but I'm closing this thread...
