The new version is a major improvement over previous versions especially when it comes to High Definition XVID files. However... playing a HD XVID is not flawless and I wonder if the PS2 is ever going to be capable of playing XVIDS with high resolutions. I have a testfile that has the following specs:

    XVID
    Resolution: 960x528
    Frames p/sec: 23,9760
    Colour Depth: 12 bits
    Audio: AC3 5.1 (samples rate 48000)

When played the audio is OK, but the picture is garbled on parts of the top and the bottom of the image. It's garbled in the same spots of the image continously. It's kind of hard to explain. Seeing is believing I guess, but my testfile is too large to link here (it's 700MB). Maybe you should hunt the net for XVID files with a resolution of 960x528 with AC3 audio so you could test and see it for yourself what happens and if it is solvable. (when looking for testfiles, sites like http://thepiratebay.org/ are a good start, for instance: http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3463369 or http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3470371. Just use the keyword 'HD').

    Keep up the good work!

When it's too much, it's too much, anyway i don't think you can enjoy this high definition on a TV screen.

what about 640x480? anybody try that? That also is a good idea for a new feature, Progressive Scan mode. This way, if 640x480 videos work really well, then we'll have 480P for SMS

@theprofessional: ...for 480P I have to have a TV capable to display that. Though low level SMS's graphics stuff has support for 720x480P mode, it was never tested, so, it's just disabled to avoid misunderstandings etc...

    New personal highest resolution!
960x544 @ 1431 kbps, 23.976 fps (no QPEL, no GMC)
    48000 Hz, 5 channel AC3 @ 384 kb/s (optical passthrough)

This XVID played perfectly. I've seen choppy playback on samples with resolutions lower than this, so I suspect that a combination of video bitrate is what allowed this video to work.

Is the PS2 capable of playing XVIDs with high resolutions? YES!

My tests: i used a XVID v:640x480 @ 1132 kbps, 29.97 fps; a:MP3 44 khz - 128 kb/s and played very well, when i played the same XVID with the bitrate at 8000 kbps, some freezes happened!
as rathunter said: "a combination of video bitrate is what allowed this video to work."
