Personally I think your mock up of a GUI is too busy and reeks of the '80's by the way it looks.

Have a look at your bottom mock up. Particuluarly the light green text against the light green splash in the background. makes for dificult reading. that's why I like SMS' current default background. high contrast between background and text. also SMS can be skinned. This means with it's current code, you can make it look differnt with .smi files.

As for codecs, what do you have in mind? h.264 is pretty much out of the question since it requires more hardware than the ps2 can offer.

I know what you mean. I've had to resort to using TMPGEnc to re-format higher res movies/anime into DVD quality divx files. This brings the resolution down to what the PS2 can handle, and is completely compatible with SMS.
