Custom skin

Hello friends, long time no see :-) One question, I am preparing a CD with the newest SMS version, and I wanted to use a custom skin. I have one that I like, the file is .smi - is this a skin I can use? Where do I need to place the skin (I have only SMS.ELF and SYSTEM.SNF in the last iso I used). How do I apply the skin afterwards? I searched the forum, found only options to place the skin in a folder on the memory card, it would be great if I can apply the skin on the CD. Thanks in advance, and stay well.

Sorry, but I don't think that is possible. SMS is designed to have all its config files in a folder on a memory card, so if started without such a folder present it will just reset all settings to defaults and try to create such a folder from scratch.

The only way I know for installing SMS skins is to create a subfolder named "Skins" inside the SMS folder on MC. And then the correct skin should be selected in the SMS configuration menus. ("Browser settings" / "Use background image")

If you really want this done automatically at booting a disc, then you'll have to write a program which can somehow perform those tasks... Personally I'd rather settle for the defaults, possibly providing a skins folder with instructions for how users of the disc can install it themselves.

Thanks. I guess it is time for me to try and install Free McBoot, and to be able to run SMS from the MC. Afterwards I will try to implement a skin through the "Skins" folder.

You don't necessarily have to run SMS from the memory card, as it will work the same way no matter where you launch the elf from. But using FMCB is always a good idea in any case, as it gives you better control of your console than most other boot systems, especially if you do the standard install that gives you a great set of generic PS2 tools and not just SMS.

Ahm, I am starting to get this :) How do I create a folder with skins in the SMS folder on the MC then? I read through the newbie FMCB tutorial, and I can see that FMCB could have problem with modded consoles...am I getting this right? I bought my console already modded, so I am not sure how to continue with FMCB. Any help would be much appreciated, since I have little time to experiment with a 2 year old and another on the way :)

FMCB has problems with the Crystal Chip.
But on my PS2 with DMS4 Pro, Ripper 3 or Matrix Infinity it works perfectly.

How do I know which chip do I have? As I said, I got the console pre-chipped :D If I can confirm it will work with my console, I would try the install this weekend. Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm, anyway, I am trying to create an ISO with cdgenps2, to no avail. I am creating the image as explained here:

I tried ISO and BIN files, and I always end up with a corrupted image that cannot be opened in PowerISO. When I created my first SMS image a few months ago (SYSTEM.CNF and SMS.ELF only), I had no problem. A few days ago I tried to create an image with a newer SMS version, and a corrupt image happened to me for the first time. It somehow gave me a non-corrupt iso image after a few tries.

But when I try to create a FMCB image, I _never_ end up with a usable image file. I tried over 20 times, iso or bin. I even read on a site that cdgenps2 does create bad iso images sometimes, but the workaround to create bin images does not work either. Any help with this? If there are no suggestions, would someone be so kind to create an FMCB iso (~25MB) with the newest SMS and send me a download link?
