I have the following equipment:
PS2
Network Adaptor
80gb Hard Drive
Memory Card
Someone has setup HD Advance on it and I know how to add/remove games.
I would like to set up Simple Media Player or similar.
I have tried looking at all the guides but am getting nowhere.
Please can someone please help me.
Thank you in advance.
Dave.

he's already using an exploit.
what you should do here, is to go to the SMS webpage, and download the CD image for SMS (or make your own if you want the latest version). install it like a game onto your HDD. if you don't have a mod chip, then you will need to do it using the HDD plugged into your PC, using winHIIP...
then, you can either use SMS through HDAdvance, or you can install uLaunchELF, which can be found in the homebrew forums here, by replacing the BOOT.ELF in your memory cards BADATA-SYSTEM folder with that of uLaunchELF... that will let you select which program (sms, or HD Advance) you want to load up whenever you boot the PS2 with that PS1 disc.
before you do any of that though, i would suggest you copy the 'your system configuration' file on your memory card to another memory card, as if you mess up, you'll have to go see your friend again to get the exploit reinstalled.

Followed the instructions to make my own version.
Installed on HDD via WinHIIP, opened up uLaunchELF - it came up with error message, " cannot find uLaunchElf.cfg?
Other features worked - eg could insert USB drive and view pictures
but couldnot find/select SMS.
Question1) For the system.cnf file do i need to change anything ie. change cdrom0 to hdd0??
Question2) What else would I need to do?
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\BOOT.ELF;1
VER = 1.00
VMODE = PAL

No it didn't, because that error message doesn't exist in the program.
What it should say for such cases (assuming a reasonably modern version) is this:
"Failed To Load LAUNCHELF.CNF"
This means that uLE failed to find that file in the same folder as the uLE ELF, and that it also failed to find it in the default location "mc0:/SYS-CONF/". For CD usage (even via HDL ISO) it is recommended to use the default location, as new settings can't be saved to a CD file. Are you sure you really had the file in mc0:/SYS-CONF/" ?
And remember that such an error is not fatal. It only means that you'll have to use the program in it's default launch state. (No fancy skin's and custom menus yet.)
Other features worked - eg could insert USB drive and view pictures
but couldnot find/select SMS.
If you mean finding it on the IDE HDD, in a normal file partition, this has been reported tons of times before. When launched via HDLoader the HDD drivers of HDLoader interferes with the normal ones that uLE needs to use. uLE wil never be fully functional when started this way, but it can still be used for some things.
If on the other hand you mean that uLE also failed to find ELFs stored on the USB drive, then something is very wrong here. Are you sure that you inspected the drive through the normal FileBrowser, and not through the special JpegViewer browser which ONLY displays JPEG files, hiding all other content (except subfolders) ??? That mistake is easily made as the browsers look identical. (It's the same code with different mode parameters.) The only visible differences are that the JpegViewer browser shows "Jpg Viewer Path:" at the top left of the screen, where the normal FileBrowser only shows "Path:", and also that the tooltips at the bottom of the screen differ.
Question1) For the system.cnf file do i need to change anything ie. change cdrom0 to hdd0??
It doesn't work that way. The SYSTEM.CNF on a CD/DVD disc can only specify a BOOT2 program on that same disc. And even if a CD ISO is in fact installed on HDD for HDLoader, the ISO content should still be treated as a CD (as it is a 'virtual' CD).
Question2) What else would I need to do?
I'm not sure you need to do much more, other than getting better acquainted with these tools.

Thanks for your post.
I apologise - I think it did say - ""Failed To Load LAUNCHELF.CNF"
I only had elf file on hdd - sounds like i should put them on usb stick.
then do i need to copy them via uLaunchElf to PS2 MemCard.

Good. It's no big deal, but it can sometimes help you get help quicker, if you report such things precisely.

I guess that you mean having them on the CD ISO that was installed for HDLoader. Right ?.
That too can work, but only if you have a LAUNCHELF.CNF file containing a directive that prevents uLE from performing an IOP reset (which kills the virtual CD driver of HDLoader). For most cases such a reset is a good thing (so it is on by default), to clean up the system for all the stuff you may want to do in uLE, but in this particular case you would need an old driver to remain active.
- sounds like i should put them on usb stick.
That's one of many ways to do it, and it's probably the simplest way to get started.
then do i need to copy them via uLaunchElf to PS2 MemCard.
That is one way to do it, but you can also launch programs directly off the USB stick, without copying. Once you have uLE running, a USB stick becomes just as capable for all uLE purposes as the Sony MemCards. And it is an advantage not to use up all the MemCard space for ELFs.
However, even if started from USB, SMS will still create a folder on MC, for storage of its settings, and it is also there that you can install SMS skins etc. So if you do want to have the SMS ELF on the MC, to keep it accessible even if the USB drive is elsewhere, that folder is a good place to store it.
