V9 strange problem –
02-06-2009,02:16 PM
I have a problem with the laser on my V9
The video below explains it best:
http://www.vimeo.com/3107719
The only way to make it even try to read media is to push the laser to the center and boot/reboot from there. Shown in video.
Is the laser or the LA chip broken ? ..
I've measured the coils .. 5,0 ohms each. Shouldnt be a problem?
BTW, i did the romeo mod .. and undid it. Still doesnt work.
Thanks in advance

The Romeo mod only works to prevent the laser and LA chip from burning. It won't help after it's burnt.
I would just use a HDD and FMCB on that PS2, and get a v7 or slim v13-17 used for playing discs. It will be lots cheaper than getting a laser, and LA chip after shipping costs and time invested to replace it. Replacing the LA is not a easy soldering job either

I did the Romeo before even loading any burnt media.
And i don't think the LA chip is broken, it shouldnt be if it is only fed with 5 volts huh?
Well, do you have any clues to the behaviour of the laser?
It seems like the motor that controls it back and forward ONLY goes back (out) from centre.. Is that motor controlled by the LA chip to?.
If so, then maybe the LA is damaged after all ...
OK, tell me how to add a harddrive and load games from there.
It would be very nice ... thanks.

I´ve noticed that you are from Sweden.Your problem is a common one.
Replace the laser moving arm the "nylon" part of the arm is worn out.

Well, i thought so too. But i bended the metal arm so it would press tighter against the threaded bar.
The problem was that the motor spun backwards causing the nylon-thing jump.
The laser works perfectly now. Tried PS1/PS2 backup/original even DVD+R D/L.
Thanks for the tip anyway!
