V5 Reading Disc......
V5 Reading Disc...... –
01-11-2006,07:44 AM
Hi
just after a little help if i could from you guys with more experience
i have a SCPH 30002 R
i got it second hand not working because i want to try my hand at fitting a mod chip later but before i do...
i would like to get this one going
here is some info as to what my unit is doing
it goes to the browser OK then it just says
Reading disc.... never disc read error
this is with all media
the disc is spinning not real fast but consistent
as the disc is turning the laser is making very fine adjustments
all the time back and forth
1.DVD Drive Tray works fine and all light are on, BA58 OK?
laser flashes once and moves up and down
if i move the laser back and reset the ps2 it moves forward hits the switch then moves back a bit
2.used CHARLIE'S photo of the main board to check all the fuses and they are all OK
3.checked the ohms reading on the laser coils 5 ohms each
4.tried marking white cog and turning anti clockwise to realign the laser two clicks at a time also adjusted laser arm slide
but no go returned adjustments to where they started.
4.checked laser pots adjusted them down 50 ohms each but no change
it has a 400c laser fitted, checked main board and this is correct
V5 stations - CD = 1200, DVD = 1400 ?
5.BA58 chip checked pin 8 to earth and it has about 19000 ohms resistance
is that OK? i measured the temp of the BA58 chip from room temp 21c
and after two minutes of run time it slowly rose to 36c
6.BA66 pin 8 i checked it anyway and its grounded but thats OK as far as i can read,is that right?
i measured the temp of the BA66 chip from room temp 21c
and after two minutes of run time it slowly rose to 34c
i have a working SCPH 30002 R but the laser is different R-Type laser
its open face and i have not tried it in the non working one just in case
could this laser work in place of the 400c? without a motherboard mod
what could i check/search for or try next?
any help would be good thanks
cheers

Sorry for the length I wish someone with the ps2 knowledge would create a sticky and consoldate all of the dvd drive information so people wouldnt have to bust their ass looking for info or spend hours troubleshooting their damn PS2z
your pots seem a little high on my ps2 repair guide it says cd pot =950 to 1200 and dvd pot = 650 to 1000 and that for the most part their best values they find that work are 1100 for cd and 950 for dvd. i dont think the pot really has that much to do because my dvd pot is sitting at 758 right now and it reads taiyo yudens, crappy legacy media that my xbox wont even touch (which confuses me) and originals as well, now my cd is another matter, I cant read these crappy memorex cds and I assume its the media since I have tried everything to get it to read them.
Mine wasnt reading dvds too well at first, I cleaned the laser with rubbing alcohol and a qtip then I adjusted the cog by setting it at its very highest setting then turning it 3 clicks at a time till i found that it read dvds reliably.
this ps2 originally wouldnt spin up the disks I found that the S7 fuse leading to the ba66 chip was blown so I had a spare v4 and swiped the fuse and it fixed it totallly.
I think you only need to check that pin 8 is grounded you dont need to worry about ohms, same with the ba58
I will check my ohms on them when I have some time and post my findings for you so you can compare even though mine is a V4
for now try the cog method 3 clicks at a time leave you cover unscrewed and just keep trying.
I have found that if the ba chips get too hot your ps2 will malfunction. this of course is a theory I would like to put to test here is what happened, while I was trying to get the damn thing to read this cdr i was doing alot of ejecting and rebooting and what not I had the enetadapter with a hd hooked up in the back while i was doing this all of a sudden my worm gear started grinding everytime I did a reboot from red led. I thought **** my shit is ****ed up now . The spindle motor switch wasnt working the laser would bump into it and the worm gear would just keep spinning forward obviously one of the ba chips is at fault since they control the motor, worm gear and laser, I believe the ba66 is the spindle motor and worm gear and the ba58 is he laser correct me if im wrong. well I got pissed and gave my ps2 a breather and about 20 min later i turned it on and it wasnt making the grinding anymore the switch was working ok. LAser would bump into it then back off a hair or two and try to read a disc.
So for the most part if your motor spins and worm gear rotates, laser bumps into the spindle switch then backs off and moves up and down trying to read then your ba chips are ok, more than likely if you cant get it to read using the cogwheel adjustment method try better media like taiyo or verbatim or buy a brand new laser
heres a dl link to the ba chip schematics

when i put my laser in the good playstation and it works i noticed that the laser goes up and down slower in the good playstation when it checks for a disc
i will adjust down the pot down as you say and give it a go anyway
could the BA58 chip be half blown?
thanks for the link just what i was looking for !
and after looking at the pin out i think i will replace the BA58chip anyway just in case the focus and tracking have problems cheap thing to try $18
looking at the block diagram the BA6665fm chip pin 8 is ground so thats OK
i will follow DarkMatters
guide on replacing the BA58 chip and i should be OK at least then i can count that chip out
thanks for the info
i used DVD2SVCD to convert PAL to NTSC for DVDs i don't think it would work for games but i have never tried
