V4 SCPH-30001R Laser Replacement Help
V4 SCPH-30001R Laser Replacement Help –
10-27-2009,12:25 AM
Hi all, I am new here. A long time ago I had a fat PS2 and then finally gave it to my younger brothers to play. It eventually got broken and tossed a few years ago. I have since picked up a non-working unit off ebay and I am trying to fix it.
It was a unit that was never taken apart before and still had the factory seal on the case. I took it apart and did all the adjustments/cleaning of both laser lens with no success. Then I dared to adjust the pots alittle and it worked great for about 5 mins then now it wont read DVD's, it plays PSX and PS2 blue CD's ok but does skip alittle. I cleaned the rails and lubed those and the worm gear assembly.
At this point I believe the DVD side of the laser is gone. It is the HD7 open face. I have looked for replacements but all the HD7's I see are different looking. After further research I came to conclude the KHS-400R is the replacement I need, I have a V4 SCPH-30001R. Does this sound right?
Also from my research The HD7 and KHS-400R will fit my unit, but heard they are not very reliable. I also heard the KHS-400C is a much better laser but the eeprom needs to be reprogramed and I am not comfortable about doing that unless its a straight forward fool proof process?
Also where would be the best place to pickup a new laser for my PS2? The KHS-400R that I would like to get is $39 with free S/H but the HD7 (that doesnt look like mine) is $29 with free S/H. Both are on ebay.
I need some pointers as to what to do? I want to fix this and have it reliable but it will not get alot of hours put on it. But I do plan to add a HDD with network adapter setup down the road. Any help is greatly appreciated!

with the hd7 you won't have to run lens changer. with the other you will

So I can run the KHS-400C in my PS2? Which of the 3 are better?

Yes, and I prefer the KHS-400C. Mine is the only thing left original of my ps2 since 2002.

Thanks.
Another thing I wanted to ask... I found one picture of a unit on how to tell if my PS2 is a V4,5 or 6. I am still alittle sketchy on how to determine this. Any pointers there? also if it matters... will the KHS-400C work with all v4,5 and 6?

I don't know. I've never had to change my laser.

Thanks agian... since my PS2 originally had the HD7 the 400R and 400C are compatible no questions asked then?
if so then I'll try to take the gamble on getting a 400C and trying it. I hope it works as I hate having to send something back lol.

you will need to run lens changer. hopefully you can install FMCB on a memorycard using a friend's system so you won't have issue doing it.

Ahhh figures, I was hoping I wouldnt have to run lens changer, I don't know how to do that yet and was trying to avoid it all together. I guess the 400R is gonna have to go in

I was doing some more researching and the more I read the more I want the 400C in my PS2.
If I HAVE to run lens changer is it an easy program to use? I already downloaded an .ISO file from this site and also backed it up on USB flash drive. Can I do it from a flash drive or do I have to use the CD method?
Also if I run the CD will it start doing anything automatically? And can I go back to my previous settings?
The 400C is also much cheaper than the 400R and HD7 so thats a plus. Thanks.
