v14 - Stuttering & Freezing
v14 - Stuttering & Freezing –
I've got a v14 that I installed a Duo3 into which seems to boot the games fine (leading me to think that the modchip & install are fine) but will stutter & freeze once the game loads and there's a little bit of movement (action) on the screen. These discs all work fine in another machine, and are either Ridata or Taiyo Yuden dvd-rs.
Generally whenever I've seen this, it's been a laser issue. I tried replacing the laser with a brand new one and it made no difference. I then decided to swap chips in case that was somehow causing the problem, but it also made no difference.
I uninstalled the chip completely, but unfortunately I didn't think to try the machine out with an original disc first to see if this problem also happen with an original disc. I also haven't had a chance to put the machine back together and try an original since I've taken the modchip out.
I thought I would post to see if anyone might be able to give me some ideas as to what may be causing this. Am I right to assume it's probably not a modchip issue because the games seem to boot fine, but have an issue when it starts loading the more graphic-intense intros to a game?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm at a loss on this one. The next thing I was going to do was re-install the chip and see what happens. But again, I don't really think it's a modchip issue. I went over the install, and it appears to be fine - no bridges or loose wires, wires routed nicely, short 5v & GND... etc.

A bit of an update... I re-installed another Duo3 and the problem persists. It seems to read originals just fine, but I did notice that the laser 'beam' doesn't seem to have as big of a focus radius when viewed through the disc when it's reading.
I think the next thing I'm going to try is to bump the laser up a bit...
Bumped the laser a bit and it didn't make a difference (I figured it wouldn't).
Just finished putting a Duo3 into another v14 and have the exact same problem. After reading another thread about the Duo3 having boot rate issues on the v14s, I'm going to try another chip - although the boot rate seems fine (it boots the game every time, but will stutter & freeze). I'm thinking that maybe the ICE code on the Duo3 isn't patching something properly and causing the problem? I dunno... but we'll see...
Oh yeah,... forgot to mention that I also tried putting a 1K resistor between 5v and GND (as per the old H20 problem), but it also made no difference.
Okay,... I feel like an idiot now...
It appears that all of my trouble was due to media issues (as I had originally figured). Here's the whole story...
A customer brought along a copy of Final Fantasy XII with his v14 PSTwo (he wanted to make sure that it worked with his machine after I modded it), and this is what kept stuttering & freezing. I'm pretty sure I had tried it in my v7 and it worked fine, but I tried it again tonight and it was doing the same thing as the v14 was. I had even re-burnt his disc onto a Taiyo Yuden dvd-r, but it didn't help. After reading somewhere, I think that maybe his copy is a PAL version - or there may be some copies leaked onto the internet that have this stuttering problem.
But the thing that really got me was that I have a backup of NHL2002 that was doing the exact same thing. I even tried re-burning my backup onto a Ridata cdr, but it didn't help. So tonight I decided to try re-burning NHL2002 from my original - and voila! it works perfectly. So somehow a flaw has developed in my original NHL2002 backup and I copied it when I tried reburning it.
So I went through a bunch of different dvd-r discs that I have and they all seem to work just fine. Just my luck that I'd have these two discs that I thought were fine all along...
