v12 RSOD on games, dvds work great, never modded
v12 RSOD on games, dvds work great, never modded –

Someone asked me to take a look at their ps2, v12, who's power wasn't working. After opening it up, I found the solder point where the power plug connects to the mobo was broken. A drop of solder later, and it's working just fine...except it won't play games. It will read dvds just fine, the laser seems to be in great shape, but any game put into it gives me the RSOD. Any ideas? I'm clueless on this one. It's never had a chip in it. I borke the warranty seal to fix the power issue.

Could be many reasons.
1) Laser is out of adjustment. try adjusting the cogs on the laser adjustment wheel (white), a few notches up or down should do.
2) Not enough power to the laser coils. Adjust the pots on the underside of the laser it should read between 1100ohm to1200ohm.
3) Dead or Dying laser. v12s is a known problem and are faulty by overvolting the laser coils causing the it to burn. This doesn't just apply for modded systems(infact modded with a quality installer, it would be fixed of this problem). Depending on which kind of games your running or what kind of media would trigger this to happen significantly earlier ie: blue bottom DVD games, cheap DVD-+R burned backup movies etc.

had a v9 with similar weird problem, but it turs out that the problem was the resistor pack (8X47ohm) around bus controller chip. it's not hard to find out using multi metre.
