When you tin the soldering iron how much solder do you have to put on it? Should i still be able to see the shape to the iron tip? Or should there be a bulge around the tip?

if theres a big blob of solder then you've got waaaaaay too much. Blobs are for 50's shlock b movies, not for soldering. There should only be enough solder to make the tip shiney. Too much and it splashes all over the board, shorts stuff out. bridges pins etc. very bad news, use thin solder and just as little as you can to make the connection. none extra
