Symptoms, advice needed.
I have a v9 PS2 with a Neo2 modchip installed (yeah, I know it sucks).
Previously, the PS2 would not read any media at all (CD, DVD, backup or original), so I turn it off, turn it back on and after a couple of tries, it would finally boot up.
Eventually, it wouldn't boot any disc at all, it'd just hang at the browser screen or give me a black screen. It was all pretty random.
So I brought the console to a friend's place, and he knows about this whole electronics stuff, he's just never really worked on a PS2.
At first we tried a PS1 original, the disc wouldn't spin, and the laser light was very weak.
Then we tried a PS2 original and it would start working after a couple of restarts. At that point the laser was a lot stronger and the disc would spin normally.
Afterwards, everything seemed to be back to normal.
He didn't do anything, it just started working all of a sudden even though I've been trying tricks that would usually get it working again.
Now the thing is, I'm not sure if it's the laser or the actual modchip that's causing the problem,
or if I should have my friend do a romeo mod on it right away or wait for it to die completely.
Also, is the v9 and v10 basically the same when it comes to the romeo mod? I found the v10 instructions online, but no v9.
I have used it a lot to play AVIs and snes ROMs off a portable hard disk, but I don't know if that would have anything to do with the chip wearing out.
I'd like to know what some of you more experienced guys would suggest I do.
Thanks for reading
sounds like the laser is dying. I would do romeo right away. Without the romeo if the laser goes chances are it could take out the LA chip as well. You can try adjust the white cogs at the back of the laser unit to get some more life out of the laser. Also wouldn't hurt to try and clean the laser.
Check out http://www.wtka-sa.com/psx/database.php - 7th point down. The 5V points are at different locations on the V9 and 10
Alright, we'll try the romeo mod and see if we can get as much as possible from the laser.
Alright, romeo fix was made, everything seems to work fine. Coils had 5.7ohm resistance, and from what I read it's supposed to be between 4-5ohm, but we left them as is.
I was wondering if it's normal for the laser light to be a bit less bright after the romeo mod?
