hey guys, i have a weller wlc100 and i hate it. the tips are way too expensive and dont last at all. so i decided that since its a solder station with a 40watt iron (adjustable via station) that I would get the radioshack 40watt (i would rather go with the 25watt..it has a smaller tip. im assuming thats possible) and plug it into the station and adjust its temperature down. i just wanted to see if you guys think this would work. thanks.

do you have a link for the one you want to get? the weller tips should last a while - maybe you have the temperature turned up too high. if you dont want the weller - i'll take it!

Dude, ripoff shack tools suck. I've burned a few of those up over the years. They just don't last or perform quite the same as say your weller. I've had 1 weller iron for 6 years now and love it. Perhaps your tips would last longer if you bought some tip cleaner. It comes in a little canister about the size of a small lip balm can. You simply heat up the iron and stick it in, it cleans and re-tins the tip for you, beautiful stuff. You can find that at ripoff shack or MCM Electronics. MCM becomes your friend once you know electronics.

hmm i read on the package that it wears down the tip if you use acid based flux. i have sterling flux that contains zinc chloride, which is an acid . i guess ill have to get new flux with a new tip. any suggestions on what flux to get would be helpful. mcm electronics looks promising. thanks.
