Soldering in General –
Well, I'm going to solder in a Duo2SE into my ps2 later. I've read the forums and everyone says to practice if you're new. So I have some questions.
1) What kind of tip should I have?
I bought a 12Watt soldering iron with a .4mm tip. When I tried soldering on a practice board (the back of my old soundcard), the tip of the iron didn't seem to melt the solder at all. I bought weller's soldering iron.
2) What does soldering flux exactly do?
3) I have problems making solder stick to the board (the place i'm trying to solder to). Any tips?
I've tried many times on my soundcard, but the solder just doesn't stick on the board (well the metallic looking spots on the board). I place the solder on it, but I can just push it off with my finger. The ones that I have done that do stick, I have a large ammount on solder on it and that probably won't work to well on the ps2.
4) So I should never let the solder iron's tip touch the ps2 board or a contact on the ps2 board in any way? If I do touch it, do not leave it there for longer than 3 seconds?
Your soldering iron tip sounds good but you may need to tin the soldeing iron tip before solder will stick to it
(If the tip is a bronze sort of colour you will need to keep rubbing solder up and down it untill you turn it a silvery-grey colour)
You dont necesserily need flux, a lot of people swear by it but in my experience you only need it if someone has made the board dirty, but most PS2s are really clean inside especially if new
To make the solder stick to the board you need to heat up the area of the board you want the solder to stick too (for example a chip leg) and then lightly touch the solder to that spot, only very lightly though as you dont want too much solder on each joint (to prevent shorts)
I would also try soldering wires to the chip legs, tin up the end of each wire with a small amount of solder and also tin the chip leg (the method above) then try to melt the wire to the chip leg
I would say not to heat the board for more than 3 seconds (as you said) but also after doing a couple of wires leave the board to cool down
You will also need a multimeter/continuity checker to test the solder joints for shorts across chip pins when you have finished

Yeah, danny has a lot of good tips there.
What i do, is to first put flux on every point im gonna solder.
Then i take the wire and stick some solder on it.
Then i attach the wire (with solder on it, not much, very little) to the point where the flux are and hold it for like 0.5-1 sec and it sticks rock solid.
I use 11w solder iron.
So flux does help but is not needed.
When I'm tinning the tip, does that mean I just add a light coat of soldier to it?
So I first heat the point where I'm going to solder the wire to, when I'm doing this, should my tip have a little soldier on the tip already?
When I touch the tip of the iron on the point then try to touch some soldier on the point, the soldier just sticks to the tip of the iron =/.

Make sure to practice ALOT before jumping on the ps2... yes tinning is wiping solder all over the tip. Also, after a while the tip gets dirty... all full of black shit... clean it with a wire brush and that will help the heat transfer a little better...
I've found that taking a wet sponge to the tip of the iron while you're tinning it is a quick way to get it clean and uniform. The blobs will harden and fall off, leaving you with a shiny, thin coat of solder on the tip.
Also, don't apply much pressure to the board! It won't melt anything faster but it will increase your chances of screwing up the board. Just touch it to what you need to solder.
As bizarre as it sounds, many people I've talked to (some of them professional solderers) recommend a higher powered iron for beginners. It'll heat the solder faster so you can get in and out more effectively, but if you linger and apply too much pressure it'll burn traces off. I use a 15 watt iron and at times I think it's not powerful enough.
Hmmm is this normal? My brother gave me a 30watt soldier to use. I tried to melt some tin on the tip of the iron, it starts smoking like crazy.
Anyway, still having a little trouble, sorry guys.
Well, my main problem is that the melted tin/soldier I stick on the board doesnt stick to the board that well. I usually put a bit of tin/soldier on a point on the board, then I put the wire (which is lightly covered in tin/soldier too) near the point on the board, I then put the tip of the iron near the two points to melt the tin/soldier to create a connection. After the connection is created, I tug of the wire a little bit and everything comes off. The point on the board looks like I never touched it. I tried heating the point on the board by both tapping the top of the hot iron on the point and holding the tip of the hot iron on top of the point for 1-2 seconds and then I proceed to add soldier the point to the wire but when I tug of the wire, all the tin/soldier comes right off.
I also noticed that a couple of times I stick the soldier to a point on the board without any tin/soldier and the metal on the board starts to melt... is this bad?

What temperature should I use for the soldering iron? I can choose from like 100 celsius to 500 celsius...

Yeah i know its lot of practice getting the shit to stick, but are u using thin enough solder? Using flux as the link i send you, my solder stick so god i can lift the motherboard up by the wiring i soldered.
Ok what is 11W in celsius? My soldering iron says 50W ?
