I use the one that came with my soldering iron (15w Radioshack iron - not the blue one, the grounded one)
What is the ideal size and shape solder tip for soldering connections from mod chip->ps2?
AT MOST 30w, but most people will recommend (me included) 15w
What wattage should the soldering iron be rated?
Everyone recommends using thicker wire for the power supplies, but Ive never tried using the same wire for both the signal wires and power wires. I use:
What is best wire gauge for regular and power/ground supplies? Can the same gauge wire be used for both or will this cause problems?
Signal - 30awg Kynar (from Radioshack)
Power - IDE cable wire (I think 24awg?)
In the order youve listed: hand, hand, tweezers. First, you tin the wire, and the pad you want to solder to. Then, with one hand, using the tweezers, hold the wire as close to the end as possible, without covering what you want to solder. Hold the wire where you want it to be soldered (I dip the wire in a bit of flux first, to help with the connection) and touch it for a second or two with the iron.
How do professional modders hold (with precision): solder, solder iron, and wire to be soldered with only 2 hands and get these little millimeter solder spots done? This seems like it requires bomb defusing finger dexterity!
It really doesnt take that much dexterity. My hands are so shaky I cant hold two signal wires parallel to each other, and Im only sixteen. The technique comes with practice, so go to an electronics store and get a broken VCR, or a broken computer motherboard, and practice soldering wires to it.
