Soldering –
12-01-2006,05:37 AM
Hi, I just received my Crystal Chip 2.0 PRO a while back and I was going to install it.
I had a few questions before that.
What kind of soldering iron do I need and where can I buy it?
Where can I find 30AWG wire?
What else do I need to solder?
Do I need flux?
I live in British Columbia, Canada so if it's online, I'd like a Canadian site please.
I can solder fine so that isn't the problem. Just need the stuff.
Thanks

if you really can solder fine, then why are you asking those questions?
it would be best to bring it to a moder, instead to waste money for
a soldering iron and all the stuff you also might need.

I'm asking the questions because I soldered in school. They were school supplies, that's why.
I don't know any installers and they cost a lot, don't they? Are there any where I live?

you are right (as long as you have enough money to buy a second one), why not try it out?
the fact is, i don't know what kind of model he has, if he has a v3 he probably will kill it
without the needed soldering experiences.
it also depends on the chip and its soldering points.
i even had some old ps1's which where badly damaged by people which thought, that they
have some soldering experiences learned in school, maybe he can handle it anyways,
but he should take a good look on the diagrams before he starts to try.
besides, not many people seemed to have your luck by doing this the first time.
@Prim3
if you try, use the fluid and get yourself some silver-wire AWG30 or bring on some tin
on the ends of the wires first, so they get a good connection,
do the same with the points where you want to solder the wires on.
use a (maybe a 50W soldering iron with a litle point will do the work).
good luck!

I have a V7 SCPH 39001 model.
That's the problem though. I can't seem to find 30AWG wire anywhere. And, I sort of need installers right here in Vancouver. Preferably or something like Burnaby. I know Jit is in Burnaby but I'm not sure if he does Crystal Chip 2.0 PRO.

Go to The Source by Circuit City, they have 30AWG Kynar wire, good solder, and a soldering pencil, not an iron. Total cost of parts, about $20.

the 30AWG you can get it on Ebay for a fairly descent price. Soldering Iron you will need one about 15 Watts, and 0.1 - 0.3mm tip. The smaller the tip, the better. Flux is optional if you got rosin core lead, but having the soldering paste (flux) wouldn't hurt either. It will come in handy when you solder the bios chip legs.

Did you try it? How did it go?
