Slimline laser issue: SPU-3170 vs PVR802W?
Slimline laser issue: SPU-3170 vs PVR802W? –

Hi there,
Is it possible to put a SPU-3170 laser assembly in a unit that previously had a PVR802W one in it?
I currently have 2x 70002 PS2's sitting here. One has been modded with a Duo3 and now the laser doesn't move anymore, it's a PVR802 (memory card screen loads up on the unit, but can't read). The other console won't boot up at all (mobo got fried by someone else trying to mod) but all parts of the laser assembly I know to be fine. It's the same as the one I have in my 75002 model, SPU-3170.
I was hoping to just put the good laser into the unit with the good motherboard, also switching the cases to fit the different laser types. However I just tried that and it doesn't seem to work. The first time I turned the unit on the laser arm moved, but didn't load. Turning the unit off and on, now the laser arm doesn't move on the good laser either.
Any ideas if it's possible? Might I have burnt out the new laser now? :S
The one with the dead laser doesn't have a laser fix I don't think (will have to unscrew to check). Hopefully it hasn't killed the working laser when I tried the switch.
If the console needs a PVR-802W to work, anyone in Australia want to swap?

Yes it is possible to swap lasers but you have to do it frame and all.
But take note ive noticed some machines get a bit funny when switching lasers and i find CD discs may not load but DVD will load fine. I dont think it will hurt your machine if you tried.
As for the result you got, umm unless your motherboards are dodgy to begin with, if the unit has a laser fix on it, it maybe be faulty, sometimes i find with older units which has the fixes done the resistors become faulty, you may need to replace the resistors. Hopefully the laser is still ok.
Test the laser(s) on a working unmodded unit before going any further.
