slim ps2 SCPH-77001. Is this a laser issue?
slim ps2 SCPH-77001. Is this a laser issue? –
I have a slim ps2 SCPH-77001 (i believe that makes it v15?) I bought it about 2 years back. I did not play too much with it but whever I did I usually used swap magic discs. Also played some originals.
Recently I took it on a trip and had put it in my check in luggage and since then it refuses to read most of the DVD games. My original GOW runs perfectly fine. But it does not read my DMC or Dragon Quest 8 originals. It keeps the disc spinning and then shows a message - no data on disc.
Also it does not read the swap magic DVD disc (same error - no data on disc) It can read the swapmagic CD perfectly fine.
I tried adjusting the pot for DVD but no difference.
Is this a laser issue? Will it help if I replace my laser? (PVR 820)
Another observation. It gives the same -no data on disc error when I put in my RE4 original. But if I lay the PS2 upside down it it sometimes loads up.
I have the magic tools installed so I can keep the lid open and look at the laser movement. When horizontal the laser is close to the center of the disc and does not move from there. When I lift the console and wiggle it a bit vertically or slightly upside down the laser then moves to the edge of the disc and starts loading the game.
I am wondering if this is a laser issue or is anything else at fault.
Can any of the pros here help me out?
It sounds like an laser problem.
Try cleaning the gear(that looks like a drill bit) that moves the lens unit.
The lubrication on that gear tends to hardened when in storage over a long period of time or a piece of hair or thread got caught wound up on the gear.
Use machine oil or cooking oil after it has been cleaned.
Note - Use caution when tweaking the lens pots, it could shorten the lens lifespan if not set correctly.
