Replacement PS2 DVD Drive

Hello. I've looked around the forums for an answer to my question and I couldn't exactly find what I was looking for. So I'll make it short and sweet. I have a SCPH-30001 that had a really hard time reading dvd games. I have a perfectly find DVD drive from a SCPH-50001 (drive,tray,laser). Can I replace the entire thing with the one from the 50001? I've read that the lasers couldn't be swapped but is it possible to do the entire drive? If not, do I have any options or am I stuck trying to find a laser for a 30001?

Actually, quite the opposite. The lasers can be swapped but not the drives themselves; there are some physical differences between the two models of DVD drive.
