Reads PSX discs but not PS2 –
12-13-2006,12:28 AM
I'm trying to fix my friends PS2. He dropped it on the floor and that caused the disc tray to jam somehow and failing to open. I opened it up and took apart the disc tray and put it back together. What had happened was the tray was no longer aligned with the rails that cause the laser to lower so the tray can pop out.
After putting it back together only PSX discs load and play. When a PS2 disc is loaded it spits out a disc read error after trying to read it for a long period of time.
I don't think the ribbon cable is damaged as I was very careful with it. But does anyone have any suggestions on things to check? What could it be?
Any help is appreciated.

The disk tray is out of alignment.
PSX games use a big laser so it should be easy to adjust to them. Let me guess, Music CD works too, but not DVDs.
Before you do anything mark where the white disk is and clean the laser with cue tips.
Their should be a white disk with teeth around the top of the drive. If you spin it you will notice the drive spin up or down. Until it drops to the bottom. Spin the white disk so that the tray goes up. Make it go all the way up until it drops. As soon as it drops spin it one tooth at a time till all media works.
