pstwo, black screen.
For some reason my v15 pstwo has suddenly stopped working. When you switch it on, the fan spins up really loud for a few seconds and then goes back to normal and the screen stays black. If you put a disc in, the fan spins really loud, then back to normal and the disc spins for a few seconds, then stops. It was working perfectly well for ages and hasn't been whacked or anything.
It's chipped with a matrix infinity, I've already opened it up and checked the points incase anything had come loose or bridged, but all seem to be fine and the chip has been in from the start anyway and no problems.
Just all of a sudden, black screen and fan spinning loud for a few seconds.
Any idea what's gone wrong?. Short somewhere I missed or something just failed?.

I had same thing with v18, installed modbo4 in it. after a long time, i got same very problem.
It turned out to be the modchip installation. Though i did'nt find anything wrong in it, but there apparently was a very minimal bad solder or something.
I you can't find anything, i say just redo the whole modchip installation :)

Ok thanks. I'll have another look over it and double check everything again and if I still can't find anything, I'll take the chip out and start over.
Two questions though, if the chip had gone bad rather than the install, can I just cut power and ground to see, or whole thing has to come out?. As might just try cutting them two and see if it lives again if I can.
Also can the pstwo run without the laser unit?, as it would be much easier to test if I could just have the main pcb and nothing else.

The "FAT" PS2 works without the laser and the slim will also work without the laser. I had once removed laser unit and started it up you will see the menu. Most homebrews should work too but some won't work without a laser unit even if it's a dead laser unit.
So for testing if your PS2 is still alive it should work perfectly.
Best regards

Pulled the chip and it's still doing it :(. Took the chip out, went over the points with desoldering braid to clean them up, then took a fibreglass pen to them to get rid of any crap and finally cleaned up with isopropyl alcohol to get rid any remaining crap and still no go.
100% sure there are no bridges where the chip was, yet still it does not work. Just black screen and fans spins loud for a second then back to normal :(.
Any ideas, fuse?, something else that can be replaced?.
