ps2 w/o dvd? will it work

I'm curious about a hack i'm thinking about doing, if you remove the dvd from a ps2 will it still boot or will it error out? leaning toward something like an integrated laptop hd with hddloader?

exactly what i was thinking of sorta kinda. but yeah that basically is it, thanks much for the info i guess my answer is yup can do it without the dvd.
