PS2 v9 doesn't detect HDD / NetAdapter Busted?
PS2 v9 doesn't detect HDD / NetAdapter Busted? –

As the topic states it doesn't detect the HDD not in uLe, OPL or HDL.
It worked just yesterday when i wanted to install a new game to the HDD from Windows.
So i started up my PC and connected the drive while Windows is ON (mind you this always worked before also with my xbox hdd).
This makes a popping sound like a fuse going off and my pc turns black.
I try to start up the computer again and it just doesn't start at all (no power?) until i remove the PS2 drive.
Then i try putting the drive back into the ps2 and it's not being detected.
So, i got myself another drive and formatted it with WinHiiP, installed the games again and set it to master.
Everything is fine according to WinHiiP but the ps2 just doesn't see it.
I've checked it on this site PS2 Hard Drive Compatibility Chart and it's supposed to work.
So does any one know what the problem could be or how i solve it?
I have tried connecting a lan cable to test the network/hdd adapter and the lights are not functioning. Maybe it's the ETH/HDD adapter that's busted? If so is anyone willing to sell me a working one :P ?
Or is it one of these fuses http://psx-scene.com/forums/attachme...-023_fuses.jpg that has gone thanks to me connecting a busted hdd?

Sure, and a child may have run across a street many times too without looking both ways first.
But that string of success still doesn't make it a good idea !!!

That popping sound was the sound of some component of the HDD bursting.
And the fact that this also 'took down' the PC temporarily indicates that the busted component short circuits at least one of the PSU voltages it is fed.

Broken drives seldom are...

Most likely the same short circuit that crashed your computer has damaged something in the network adaptor. Hopefully just a fuse.

I think most people in this forum that have one will want to hold on to it, as they are becoming rare.
But hopefully it is no 'real' component that has blown in the network adapter, but merely a fuse.
That is what I would guess, and if you have a multimeter it should not be hard to check.
Fuses are very low resistance resistors, so when you measure them with a multimeter set to a 'normal' range with a max of somewhere around 100 to 1K Ohms, the resistance readout should be very close to zero, in the normal state. But in the 'blown' state the resistance should be close to infinity (except for trace currents going other paths than through the fuse).

So this means that if i find the faulty component, it would take some soldering and a replacement to fix it?
If so i just may have to buy a new on ebay, and ebay doesn't agree with you on PS2 lan adapters becoming rare
Thank you for your help

Yes.

True, but a lot of those are essentially fake. Some time ago some people started to clone the network adapters, but only for HDD use, so those adapters have no networking ports, which to me is the most important interface in a network adapter. I use that far more than I use the HDD.
So take care to ensure that you get a fully equipped unit.

I'll take it to my local elctronics-all-in-one-handywizardman-shop and see if the guy there can fix it.
Thanks alot for your help

i just tried a new n/a and it doesn't get detected either, the network install disc wont even boot after showing the PlaystStation Logo.
And i've tested the n/a on a different ps2 and it works.
All that's left is to check the fuses...

So i have had the one faulty fuse replaced, and the hdd adapter seems to have become a frankenstein - a monster.
The harddrive only works when it feels like it ..
If i run SMS then it hangs while trying to detect HDD, same thing with ULE, HDD Loader and Open PS2 Loader.
Then i reboot the PS2 a couple of times and it suddenly works and i can play games off of it :S
What can be causing this??
