PS2 V7 GH-017 modbo 760 was working, disc reading now... –
I hope you guys can help me out. I'm new to PS2 modding but have modded a number of XBOXs without any problem. I've got a V7 PS2 with a modbo 760 chip. The install went fine and the unit booted up and played "backed-up" games without any trouble. I was playing Black (backed-up copy) for about 45mins, hit the pause button because someone interrupted my gameplay and bam. The unit locks up and the controller is non responsive. I reset the machine and I get "disc reading..." I start searching for this problem on this forum board and came up with many possibilities. First I did a laser calibration (the white wheel) I was able to get it so far out of focus that it would say "disc error" so I put it back to the original position until I got the previous "disc reading..." I have another V7 with the exact board and laser (GH-017) not modded. I swapped drives and the drive out of the modded V7 works fine in the non-modded V7, needless to say the drive out of the non-modded produced the same "disc reading..." in the modded v7. I've doubled checked all soldier points and all fuses with no luck. Everything checks out. The eject button works and the disc spins up. If I run the drive without the cover on I can see the laser light up nice and red and attempt to focus onto the disc the laser also goes to its home point. I've tested the BA5 chip and came out with these readings.
VO4+ = 1.519 with black on GND
VO4- = 1.523 with black on GND
VO3+ = 1.519 with black on GND
VO3- = 1.627 with black on GND
VO4+ = .610 with red on GND
VO4- = .608 with red on GND
VO3+ = .609 with red on GND
VO3- = .867 with red on GND
VO4+ = .694 with black on Focus VCC
VO4- = .696 with black on Focus VCC
VO3+ = .694 with black on Focus VCC
VO3- = .939 with black on Focus VCC
VO4+ = 1.329 with red on Focus VCC
VO4- = 1.389 with red on Focus VCC
VO3+ = 1.396 with red on Focus VCC
VO3- = 1.512 with red on Focus VCC
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
i think to test the ba chip u see if pin 17 or 18 is grounded and if it is u need a new one
I tested the BA5 chip again. pin 17 and 18 is not grounded. I've removed the modbo 760 chip and all of the wiring triple checked all soldier points to make sure there weren't any shorts. The PS2 does the same exact thing. Boots up and just says disc reading...

still having the same problem.
has anyone else come across this issue before?
my v7 dose it but thats coz the laser if ****ed
I have two V7s the one that is modded and an original. Both drives work fine in the unmodded console.
Measured 1 x BA and 3 LA on a mainboard.
One LA OUT2F had no reading versus ground or vcc and is defect.
All other measured value's are very close together.
Your measured VO3- value is maybe an indication that the BA chip is not ok.
Did you check your laser coils ?, should be around 4.7 ohm.
If this value gets below 2 ohm, you need a new BA or LA.
Is this common to have the PS2 burn it self out from trying to hard to read media? If so whats the point? It seems that this can get very expensive in repairing these boards.
So I tested VO3- on both my un-modded V7 and my modded V7 that doesnt work. V03- is exactly the same as VO4-,V04+,V03- and V03+ on the unmodded v7. On the modded v7 V03- has a slightly different reading than the rest.
see the first post for the readings.
any ideas? should I replace the BA5 chip?
